We’re really excited to announce that our book ‘The Portrait Photographer’s Manual’ published by @thamesandhudson will be released on the 20th July. A labour of love from the both of us: we wanted to produce a book that we felt represented the diverse voices and approaches that make up portrait photography today. The book is filled with ruminations on images we love as well as more general reflections on the genre of portrait photography. Alongside this we have ‘projects’ that teach and encourage the reader to experiment with different techniques and ways of thinking.

Neither of us ever dreamt we would have our names on this kind of book and we’ve worked so hard to create something that we wish had been in the world when we were learning how to make pictures. The conversations we’ve had while creating it have taught us so much. We hope you can enjoy learning from it too.

Massive thanks to all the photographers for sharing their incredible work. It’s a privilege to showcase such a broad approach to portraiture from so many of our favourite photographers. In order of appearance in the book:

Another brilliant project that we're really excited to be featuring on Togspace. Photographer and writer Debmalya Ray Choudhuri from India shares with us his latest project.

This photograph is an extract from my long-term work Tat Tvam Asi. It reminds me of an uncanny solace that I found in a place far from home. In troubled times we live in, we often get lost in the humdrum of chaos and this might let us lose our own identity. Sometimes home is a feeling, a state of being. This photograph talks about my existence in a place tucked away in the largest mountains in India. Religious or not, spiritual or not, I have no answers to that. I do not believe in those words.

This is a personal journey, a psychogeography. Everything else is meant to confine us in a system corrupt by power and greed.

Submission from @debmalyachoudhuri for @tootiredproject.

He shares with us: “This image called “United” is from a work called Tat Tvam Asi. It is a phrase in Sanskrit which translates to Thou Art That (That you Are) in English. Although this phrase manifests itself through different literal interpretations in historical texts in India, it essentially connects us to a sense of being, a sense of the self, of who we are. In my life, this bears significance to my sense of belonging in a place. Seeing my own family fall apart and confronting my own sickness and the loss of a loved one pushed me to severe depression. After a year of suffering, I took a journey not knowing the destination. That is when Rishikesh happened to me. A place tucked away in a dream. Photographing the same place for a prolonged time, became a need. A need to exist. The desire to reconcile. I start reacting to every detail of life and nature around me. I am there, distant from the reality of a past. I am there, all by myself in a world of my own. My “Home”. This moment reminds me of light in the darkness and how through photography I could start living again.” #tootiredproject #arthelps #photography #mentalhealthawareness #depression

#SoupLoves - Tat Tavm Asi, a personal project by Debmalya Ray Choudhuri (@lifeinafoto) which he shot during a time when he was coping with the loss of a friend and a home.
Deb says, the desire to photograph a place unknown to him, hidden in the foothills of the Himalayas made him visit the same spot over the course of 6 months and spend time embracing its presence in his life. His sense of incompleteness being projected into a vast space of light, often interspersed with fragments of the dark.
For him, Tat Tvam Asi is significant to a sense of belonging in a place.

Wrapped Up.
The nights in Janwaar are often pitch dark due to intermittent electricity supply. Janwaar is located amidst the forests and inland from the highway from Panna to Satna. There is not much activity at nights. The kids mostly help in cooking or watch TV. The adults sometimes have to head to the fields to keep a watch for wild animals damaging crops.
In picture: A girl all wrapped up as the night sometimes can get cold in the months of February and March also.
From my long term ongoing work on Janwaar-The Journey.
