POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

reflecting on monday night at Clio’s in convo with @elizrosner (Third Ear: Reflections on the Art + Science of Listening) + @leighmarz (Golden: The Power of Silence in a World of Noise)… I began the evening with…

“The training of the senses must begin in the formative period of life, if we wish to perfect them later through education and make use of them in any particular human skill. The education of the senses makes men observers.” - 1912

Maria Montessori believed that education begins with the senses - that we must first train the body to perceive before the mind can truly know. Italo Calvino, in Invisible Cities, adds a subtle warning: “I speak, and speak ~ but listener retains only the words he is expecting … It is not the voice that commands the story: it is the ear.”

As an anthropologist and design ethnographer @cacollegeofarts, I often remind my students that the ear is not neutral ~ it is shaped by culture, bias, history, and desire. Our task is to re-educate the senses so that we can listen not just for what we expect, but for what surprises, unsettles, or emerges in silence…. Tonight, Liz + Leigh invite us into that very practice: to listen with a third ear + rediscover silence as its own form of knowledge… After an hour of beautiful conversation I ended with -

“If Montessori asked us to begin with the senses, and Calvino reminded us that “it is not the voice that commands the story, it is the ear,” then perhaps our work is to keep training the ear, not just for what is present, but for what is absent. I think of the Phone of the Wind in Japan, where people speak into an unconnected telephone to loved ones they’ve lost. It is a practice of listening beyond the audible, of tending to traces that remain. For me, it recalls even my father, whose voice I never knew, but whose silence still shapes me. Both The Third Ear and Golden remind us that listening and silence are not merely about sound - they are ways of attending to memory, to grief, to presence across time. They teach us that to educate the senses is also to open ourselves to what lingers, what echoes, and what continues to speak in the quiet.” 🤍 🙏🏽 @debdurant

Whispers of the deep, where true nature breathes, birth these luminous orbs. Golden South Sea pearls, an ethereal gathering, awaiting their destiny as a necklace of rare and fluid grace. Behold their oblong forms, their hues, a beauty whispered only by creation itself. Come, adorn yourself with this wonder, and let the ocean's poetry embrace your soul. Beauty dwells within, waiting to be unveiled.

I can't believe it's been a month since I headed down to @penlandschool and spent 2 weeks in the wonderful letterpress studio. I want to share the amazing work my students made, combining pressure prints with hand set type. It's all just wonderful work, and so varied- everyone brought something different to the studio. Swipe to see all 9 books, tagged with their makers. #penlandschoolofcrafts #penlandprint #letterpress #pressureprints #instabooks #handsettype @penlandprint

This Mother’s Day weekend was gorgeous. My friend, Karina has a studio in Strawberry Creek Design Center and hosted a little pop-up in front of the Center with me and a few other artists. We all enjoyed spending time with each other..along with showing/selling our work.
One of my favorite parts about these artist group events is the trading that happens between us. This weekend I traded my pots for the pieces of beautiful work in the photo at the end of this reel..
- A tote and a card made from gorgeous paintings by @karina.racz
- A lovely top printed from a cyanotype taken from pieces found around the space near Austin where @debdurant exposed the print during the latest solar eclipse!
- A print @the_wonderstruck_printmaker made from a linocut piece that I could not resist because it’s beautiful and because it features a black cat, just like our black cat! It will live in my studio for creative inspiration.

My cousin asked for 6 mini (10oz) mugs in any colors I wanted. I needed inspiration, so I searched through his Instagram and found this cool painting he made. The colors sparked my interest, so I aimed in that direction. I wanted the mugs to have more of a beach vibe since he lives close to the ocean and surfs, so here is how they turned out!

I enjoy doing commissions..let me know if you would like to replace your mis-matched mugs or bowls to a more cohesive handmade (with love) set.

I’ll be at a pop-up this weekend at Strawberry Creek Park (outside the Hidden Cafe) in Berkeley this Saturday from 10-2 ..come say hello and check out my work along with 3 other artists. @karina.racz @the_wonderstruck_printmaker @debdurant
Should be a beautiful sunny day!
