I am honored to have been a part of this artist residency and in this exhibition, put on by @kolajmagazine . This has been life changing and has impacted my artistic practice in the most beautiful ways. I’ve learned so much from the incredible artists that I worked with and I’m honored to know them. What can I say? It was magic🖤

Heroes answer a call to adventure. The many forms of the hero may include the primordial hero, the childhood of the hero, the hero as warrior, lover, emperor and tyrant, redeemer, and saint. The path of the hero in their mythological adventure follows the rites of passage: separation - initiation - return. The refusal of the call is followed by supernatural aid, and the entering into separation. The road of trials, meeting with the goddess and atonement with the father can be some of the parts of the hero’s initiation. The return of the hero is marked by the refusal to return, the rescue from without, and mastering the two worlds to achieve the freedom to live and the power to renew the world.

“I have collected vintage textiles, buttons, and ephemera which tell stories of people, especially women, who came before me. What stands out most to me during these strange times is not, however, the Villains who wish to control, but the strength and perseverance of the Heroes who will not be controlled.” -Debi A Barton on the artist’s work in the Heroes & Villains show including “She Died Last Night- Metamorphosis 3”, 2022, vintage paper, newsprint, fibers on Bristol board, on view now in the Heroes & Villains show.

“Oftentimes, I think of the story while creating my images. My models, in a way, will then become ‘heroes’ of those stories. It so happens that ‘Madame Scrutiny’ is actually a personal hero of mine. It was created at a muddy construction site with renowned photographer/artist Brooke Shaden as the model.” -Yevette Hendler on Madame Scrutiny, 2014, archival pigment print, on view now in the Heroes & Villains show.

The story of the hero and villain is told in many ways. Heroes answer a call to adventure. The path of the hero in their mythological adventure follows the rites of passage: separation - initiation - return. The most told part of the hero’s story includes the villain. The villain takes form and a victory is won.

There is a real problem with me trying on clothes because I want to keep them! …It’s true of this absolute salvage piece that I’m pleased to have had a hand in bringing back to life. A couple of months ago my customer turned friend and local fiber artist @debi_a_barton happened to be in the shop when this 50s floral circle skirt was headed to the trash pile. It had broken fake flowers glued all over it along with splotches of old dried glue and I didn’t have the bandwidth to save her… Debi poured all of the love into this piece. Hand beaded and adorned with rhinestones, embroidery, felt and fiber foliage and giant plisse pleat flowers. A stunning full circle beauty SAVED from the trash. Coming soon to the ETSY and currently available in the shop. Not at all tiny. ❤️#buyvintagesavetheworld
Also how about that angora bolero??! That’s going to be hard to let go of… 🤭
