POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Way back in 1984, at the tender age of nine, I played little Lost Boy “Tootles” in the Cleveland Playhouse production of Peter Pan. Opening night was a huge gala event (although everything seems much bigger when you’re only nine), and legendary actress Mary Martin—who won a Tony Award for her portrayal of Peter Pan—even signed my program. Our Peter was played by Barrie Youngfellow of “It’s A Living” fame, who sadly passed away in March of 2022. She was an absolute joy to work with and a saint for putting up with our Lost Boy antics.

One of my fondest memories of this show was a scene where The Lost Boys quickly build a tiny house. What the audience didn’t know was that we built it over a trap door in the Bolton Theater stage floor. One by one we filed into this impossibly tiny structure, like an elaborate clown car gag, feet first into the trap door and down a long slide into the waiting arms of a smiling stagehand. And I remember doing all of this while fighting pneumonia! I refused to miss a single performance for fear of letting the rest of the company down. That old Catholic guilt already in full blossom!

At the time of that production, the Cleveland Playhouse had just gotten a multimillion dollar makeover with an entirely new facility housing several stages. Today, the old theater at 8500 Euclid Avenue is no more—it was abandoned for over a decade and ultimately demolished in early 2023. But those memories have stayed with me throughout the course of my career and are a big part of who I am today. I think it’s finally time to get back on that stage…
