On 16 May, sinokultur im Salon welcomed writer, researcher, and filmmaker Jialu Zhu for a presentation titled 'Between Home and World'. Through personal reflection, academic research, and cinematic analysis, Zhu explored the evolving meaning of “home” in an increasingly interconnected yet fragmented world. Originally from a small town in Northern China and now based in Zürich, Zhu shared how her experiences of migration and cultural transition have shaped her research. Her work examines how ideas of home, belonging, displacement, and identity are represented across film traditions, from American Westerns and Hong Kong gangster cinema to contemporary Chinese melodramas. Zhu explained that her PhD project was shaped by major global developments, including the 2019 US–China trade war, the Hong Kong protests, and the COVID-19 pandemic. These events raised broader questions about migration and identity: Where is home for people living abroad? How do political tensions shape our understanding of the world and ourselves? And how are feelings of connection transformed in times of uncertainty? Using selected film scenes, Zhu demonstrated how cinema can be interpreted through historical context, visual storytelling, cross-cultural comparison, and socio-political analysis. The films discussed included The Searchers (1956), Internal Affairs II (2003), and Mountains May Depart (2015). Despite their different cinematic traditions, all three explore themes of migration, emotional distance, and the search for belonging. The discussion was enriched by moderator and filmmaker Yunlong Song (@yunlongsong), who contributed perspectives on film theory and practice. The audience engaged actively, sharing reflections on cultural shock and navigating cultural diversity in everyday life. The Salon concluded with lively conversations and an apéro lovingly prepared by sinokultur's gastronomic advisor Ivo Jud. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our speaker Jialu Zhu for the insightful presentation as well as the entire team of sinokultur for making this event possible. 🌼🌼🌼 Credit photo nr. 1 @dariovereb #sinokulturimsalon #sinokultur #zurich

On Saturday, February 7, sinokultur organised a tour @galerieursmeileofficial’s Zurich Ankerstrasse space with independent Beijing-based curator @yangzi0424, under the title 'A Place of Concealment'. The group exhibition continues a concept first developed by Yangzi in 2022 at Galerie Urs Meile Beijing. The show brings together ten contemporary artists — eight of them Chinese — working across painting, installation, and moving image. Entering the space feels like stepping into a storage garage: half-packed artworks scattered around, open wooden crates, and bubble wrap on the floor. Some pieces are deliberately not perfectly hung, while artwork information is simply taped to the wall. Yangzi explained that this chaotic setting is intentional. The crates symbolise Pandora’s box, releasing danger and disorder. Visitors are encouraged to slow down, stay with the works, search for hidden messages, and make their own discoveries rather than consuming the exhibition at a glance. Among the artists is Ai Weiwei @aiww, represented by three used suitcases from his participatory project Fairytale(2007), in which he brought 1,001 Chinese citizens from different social backgrounds to Kassel. Works by Swiss and Vietnamese artists add further layers of dialogue and diversity to the exhibition. During the Q&A moderated by Debbie Schaer @debschaer, founder of @toaa_art, Yangzi described the exhibition’s darker tone as a reflection of his experiences during the pandemic in Beijing — a time marked by emotional distance, endless scrolling, and social fatigue. Most of the artists are based in Beijing, where Yangzi lives and works. Frequent studio visits help him understand what artists choose to hide or reveal. As China’s political centre, shaped by sandstorms, constant political conversations, and intense urban life, Beijing offers a charged environment for contemporary artistic production. We would like to thank Yang Zi and Galerie Urs Meile for welcoming us in this beautiful space and for giving us a very insightful tour! Artists: @bianqingart, @chenzuo_3, Han Zishi @zzishihan, @klodin-erb, Li Kejin, @liangyuyue, Mai Ta @qmaita, Wang Xingwei, Xie Nanxing. Open til April 2

member and @toaa_art founder @debschaer visited the exhibition 'Yúqiáo' by Chinese artist Duan Jianyu in the @ydp_space in London. The lively group was welcomed by the artist Duan Jianyu (@xue_gaooo314) and the curator Yang Zi (@yangzi0424) for an insightful tour thru the exhibition. The exhibition is titled after ‘Yúqiáo’, a recurring motif in Chinese literati painting and philosophy that translates to ‘the fisherman and the woodcutter’. Traditionally imagined as reclusive observers of the human world, the duo offers a holistic cosmology that views time, nature and history with a transcendent, non-binary perspective. In this new series, Duan reimagines the motif as shape-shifting characters. These figures drift from pastoral landscapes into the sprawl of contemporary life. By unleashing 'Yúqiáo' from its classical framework, Duan invites reflection on the quiet wisdom embedded in daily experience amid a fractured global reality. Spread across three floors, the exhibition features twenty new paintings and a group of sculptures from the Yúqiáo series, along with a salon-style display of earlier works and archival materials. Currently based in Guangzhou, Duan Jianyu (b. 1970, Zhengzhou) is known for her deceptively childlike visual language and stylistic hybridity. While painting is at the core of her practice, her work includes sculpture, writing and other forms. She was awarded Best Artist at the Chinese Contemporary Art Awards (CCAA) in 2010, and has exhibited widely, including at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2018) and the 50th Venice Biennale (2003), among others. We would like to thank Duan Jianyu and Yang Zi for their time and the fascinating tour! And because our trip to Engadin was such a hit, here are some more photos to share with you of our visit to PARKIN SENT by @fundaziun.notvital . On Sunday morning, we were welcomed to this mind-bending park by our wonderful guide, Mary. Over the course of about two hours, she led us through the fantastical landscape, sharing the stories behind the various installations and how these imaginative creations came to life. The park was built in the first half of the 20th century, by architect Nikolaus Hartmann for Lüzza (Luzio) Crastan. When the second World War broke out, Crastan had to abandon his dream of building a villa in the Engadin. By then, the parkin had been realized with all of its paths, with a swimming pool and a terrace for the house – but without a house. With time, the parkin became overgrown by nature. Of all that used to be, barely anything remained visible and all of the paths became impenetrable. In May 1998, Not Vital bought the park from Otto Augustin and subsequently transformed it into a foundation named Not dal mot. With his brother Duri, he began to bring the park back to life. They cut many trees, freed the paths from all the ingrown plants, planted flowers and vested the swimming pool with stainless steel. With the years, sculptures were installed and architectural installations were built. These days, crossing the valley isn’t your typical stroll—you might find yourself balancing on donkey heads (as our fearless member Anita did!) or tiptoeing across an invisible bridge. There’s even a house made entirely of shimmering Murano glass, stairs and all. And just when you think you’ve seen it all, another house appears out of the ground with the push of a button—purely surreal! If you have time get a tour - it is really an amazing place to visit! Each Friday, from mid-June to the beginning of October, the parkin is open to the public. #parkinsent #sinokultur @danieleagosti.ni #sinokulturmembersonly #sinokulturtrips #engadin #sent #fundazionnotvital

On Saturday sinokultur and members travelled to the stunning Engadin to visit the @fundaziun.notvital at Planta House and @galerieursmeileofficial in Ardez, as well as the Castel Tarasp. Needless to say, with the amazing weather and 30 degrees celsius, we had the ideal conditions for exploring this beautiful part of Switzerland. At the patrician Planta House in Ardez—dating back to 1642 and home to the Fundaziun Not Vital since 2006—we were warmly welcomed by Daniele Agostini @danieleagosti.ni . He guided us through the historic building, which is rich with artworks, a library of Romansh literature, and exhibitions and publications dedicated to both local and international artists. Another highlight was our visit to the Urs Meile Gallery in Ardez, where @seizkarin, partner of the gallery, gave us a tour of the beautifully renovated farmhouse. Each August, this unique space is transformed into an expansive gallery. Currently on view is a solo exhibition by Swiss artist @juliasteinpapier, alongside a group show featuring works by gallery artists such as @steigerrebekka and Klodin Erb. Our final event of the day was a visit to the impressive castle of Tarasp, originally built around 1040 by the lords of Tarasp. In 2016, the castle was purchased by Swiss artist Not Vital. Today it houses an eclectic collection of antique, modern and contemporary art. Our group was welcomed by the castle owner NOT VITAL himself. The visit concluded with a touching and joyful concert featuring the three Ladin artists Marlene Schuen, @granruazjeandaniel & alex_trebo . We would like to thank everyone that welcomed us and of course our wonderful members for making this day so special and leaving us with a ton of colorful and vibrant impressions! Swiss artists @nici.jost and @laurabadertscher would like to invite you to the opening of their exhibition STAGED FOR ELSEWHERE @villadesein in Zurich on June 12 from 6-8pm. What happens just before, in between? Staged for Elsewhere brings together works by Laura Badertscher and Nici Jost that explore moments of transition, with bodies that elude definition and spaces that become stages. Laura Badertscher paints figures in states of anticipation—fragmented, suspended, subtly shifting. Nici Jost uses pink as a visual and conceptual tool: seductive and critical, it probes cultural codes and questions societal roles. LAURA BADERTSCHER’s practice is rooted in figuration, with a strong focus on the human body. In recent years, Laura has increasingly focused on the genre of the nude and its complex history of representation. By juxtaposing iconic imagery with banal or absurd snapshots, she creates a visual language that can be seductive, humorous, and disconcerting at once. Laura received her Master of Fine Arts from the National Art School in Sydney in 2018. After several years in Australia, she returned to her hometown of Zurich in 2019. NICI JOST's photography focuses on the intersection of art and culture, documentary, portraiture and still life. The works exhibited were taken during her residency in Shanghai, China, at the @swatchartpeacehotel. Her work is characterised by playfulness and subtlety and she has a distinct sense for colour and composition. Nici is Swiss photographer and conceptual artist who was born in Banff, Canada and moved to Switzerland at a young age, where she now lives and works with her family. After studying photography at the Nova Scotia Community College in Halifax, Canada, she worked as an assistant to Pipilotti Rist for over a year. In 2010 she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Media Art. In 2016 she received a Master of Fine Arts from the Institute Art Gender Nature (HGK FHNW) in Basel. Curated by @isabelbalzer -see you next Tuesday Opening: June 12, 2025 | 6–8 PM Villa de Sein, Scheideggstrasse 28, Zurich (near the Rietberg Museum)

and its members spent a sunny Saturday afternoon by the Lake Thun, immersed in art, stories, and a thoughtfully curated Apéro. The day was filled with joy, lively conversation, and lots of laughter—a true celebration of culture and community. Following an inspiring introduction to the history of the stunning @kunstmuseumthunpanorama by its visionary director @helenhirsch_kempf, we were invited on a journey through two deeply resonant exhibitions—"Bing Feng" and "Navigating Time and Space"—personally guided by the artists @steigerrebekka and @angelalynpainting. Their insights offered a rare glimpse into the creative processes and poetic narratives behind their work. Rebekka enchanted us with works that seemed to breathe with color and movement, their vibrant energy spilling beyond the canvas and into the room. Angela wove a quiet spell through stories of her family’s past, each collected Chinese object a fragment of memory, tenderly preserved and reimagined—echoes of another time speaking softly through her art. The museum visit was followed by a delicious Apéro hosted at the beautiful home of sinokultur founder Tina Müller. Everyone enjoyed the sunny weather and the breathtaking views of the lake and the Bernese Alps. Despite the chilly water, a few brave members even took a dip in the lake. Heartfelt thanks to the two artists Rebekka and Angela for the insightful tours and to Helen Hirsch for the warm welcome at the Kunstmuseum Thun. More thanks to the team of sinokultur with @yunlongsong, Ivo Jud, Doris Sommer and our host @tina.mueller.355 for their dedication. BIG thanks also to @nici.jost.photography for the stunning photos—they truly captured the moment. Last but certainly not least, a huge THANK YOU to our members, whose support makes these events possible and tons of fun!!! Last Friday we were invited by Chinese artist Xinyu Han @suki.rar for a tour at @modernanimalsgallery in Zurich. It was an incredible treat to hear this eloquent young woman talk so vividly and freely about her life and art work. Xinyu studied art at the School of Visual Arts in New York and at Slade School of Fine Art in London. This is were she was trained to think critically and express her feelings and thoughts through her art work. Xinyu shared with us that what inspired her for this exhibition was a poem by the author T.S. Eliot. The first line of the poem became the title of her show: 'At the still point of the turning world.' As in the poem the themes of duality and time influenced her preparation for the exhibition and became part of her works. Other themes that appeared were the color black, cars and the car wash shop. About the color black the artist mentioned how she had become fascinated by painting on black canvas. She began changing between painting on white canvas or black canvas and noticed how different it felt. The emptiness of a white surface could sometimes feel scary and challenging. Painting on a black gesso canvas was like 'pulling the light out of the darkness line by line'. There were many inquisitive questions from the audience which Xinyu answered openly and thoughtfully. One guest observed that her paintings seem to focus on man-made objects rather than nature. Xinyu explained she had never really lived in nature but had always lived in big cities such as Shanghai, New York or London and was therefore more familiar with this man-made lifestyle. The audience felt inspired and touched by Xinyu and her work and we would like to thank her for taking the time and letting us have insight into her life and art. Many thanks also to David and Finn from Modern Animals Gallery for inviting us and introducing us to this wonderful artist. Don't miss the chance of visiting this exhibition! It is still open until February 28th. Location: Modern Animals Gallery, Zeltweg 32, 8032 Zurich #sukirar #modernanimalsgallery #sinokulturarttour #sinokultur #zurich
