The westernized term “Desert Blues” is a little reductive.

Artists from Mali, Niger, Algeria and more have created a genre of music that is inseparable from the struggle and resistance of the Tuareg people, and it’s called Tishoumaren.

Singeli is many, many things.

It’s been called ‘art borne from lack’ by BBC News Africa, the ‘hyperpop’ of Tanzania, and the future of afrofuturism…

Karen Chalamilla wrote that “Singeli has not always been legible or accepted in mainstream Tanzanian media, so it is tempting to think of Singeli as a counterculture…[but] Singeli is not necessarily resisting hegemony; it is instead a response of working-class youth to their living conditions. The way the genre sets itself apart is not by resistance, but by a strategy of creation.”

But one things for sure: it’s fast, it’s frenetic, and it’s very, very fun.

I’m starting a Substack (with @stem)

While short form videos are a great medium for my work (and will continue to be my primary focus), there’s always so much more I want to talk about when broaching a topic. This feels like the logical next step.

We’ll be posting deeper dives into topics we’ve discussed (like ‘Internet Music’s Sincerity Arc), further analysis of sonic trends and musical shifts through a cultural lens, and more stories in music you probably haven’t heard before.

A series about decentralizing the 🇺🇸 hegemony and getting into music that says something about the world you live in.

Today we’re talking jazz, and while these records aren’t exactly obscure, knowing the context around them matters. Each one represents a significant rupture against the internal cultural colonization of jazz, the white critical gatekeeping that repeatedly tried to define what the music “really” was.

AI has hit jazz streaming income harder than almost any other genre.

This playlist is older, but I’ll be highlighting younger jazz artists in future videos and actively trying to push the algorithm back toward real musicians.
