„Go Fishing“ returns in a revised version!

On November 4th and 5th, ON THE EDGE presents the revival of its second major in-house production. At its heart is Irene Bento, a Jewish circus artist who survived the Holocaust thanks to her courage and the support of circus director Adolf Althoff and his family. Using the secret code „Go fishing“, they hid Irene Bento and her family from the Nazis, risking their own lives in the process.

Circus, choreography, text, and visual art come together in a performance about a true story of solidarity and resistance. An accompanying exhibition offers further insight into Irene Bento’s life and the historical context of her story.

Was mal ganz klein begann, ist groß geworden.

🎟️ Ganzes Programm & Tickets in Bio!

What started out small has grown into something much bigger. Over the years, ON THE EDGE has evolved into a festival that is here to stay.

This year’s program is going to be wild, unexpected, queer, and truly extraordinary… 👀

For ten days, Vienna turns into a stage for local and international artists. Personal stories meet pressing social issues; intimate solo acts stand shoulder to shoulder with large-scale stage productions. It’s an exploration of trust, risk, resilience, solidarity, identity, gender, and parenthood—at times quiet and tender, at others loud, fierce, and defiant.

„Go Fishing” tells the story of Irene Bento, a Jewish circus artist whose extraordinary determination and strength of character shaped her life both in the ring and beyond.
The talented performer survived the Holocaust thanks to her courage and the support of German circus director Adolf Althoff, who took Irene and her family into his circus and hid them from the Nazis. Their secret code for disappearing quickly was “Go fishing”. Adolf Althoff, his wife Maria, and other circus members risked their lives to protect Irene and her family.

The performance is ON THE EDGE’s second major in-house production, a revised version. Bringing together circus, choreography, text and visual art, Go Fishing uses this true story to explore the social fabric of circus life — and to ask what solidarity and resistance can look like in times of danger.

Tickets are available via the link in our bio — be quick and grab an Early Bird ticket while you still can!
