Yesterday's Chinese New Year celebration on the Belgrade Waterfront. You can watch the full video by clicking the link in bio 🎊❤️‍🔥🏮🎉🧧
.
Back to the bears! Today, when you read about barong, even on Wikipedia, you’ll come across sentences and paragraphs like this: ‘The native Indonesians of Austronesian heritage often have similar mask dances that represent either ancestral or natural spirits; an example is the Dayak’s Hudoq dance or any similar bear worship practice. The term barong is thought to have been derived from the local term bahruang, which today corresponds to the Indonesian word beruang, meaning “bear.” It refers to a good spirit that takes the form of an animal, acting as the guardian of the forest (compare to bear worship).’ However, when I first began researching the barong, all I could find was that the mask was most likely influenced by the Chinese lion, much like other Asian masks of this type. Whether this is true or not, the question still stands: How did the Chinese lion dance come about, considering the lion is not a native species of China? One of the most intriguing things I encountered during my research was a quote from Fan Pen Li Che’s 2007 book Chinese Shadow Theatre: History, Popular Religion, and Women Warriors. It points to an interesting reference in early Qin Dynasty (221–206 BCE) sources that describe dancers performing exorcism rituals while wearing bearskin masks. This detail is significant for understanding the early cultural connections between bears, animal symbolism, ritual performances, and exorcism practices in ancient China. But I’ll delve more into this in the next posts.
