@cathrobots, and @magda_drozd_ will present an electronic improvisational set for Minor Renaissance. 21 October at 7 PM at @thehorsehospital Get your tickets on @gel.now Cath Roberts (they/them) is an improviser, composer and artist based in Hastings, UK, whose work combines acoustic and electronic improvised music, experimental composition, and DIY publishing practices. On saxophones, Cath has collaborated with a wide range of artists and ensembles internationally for over a decade. Their band Sloth Racket has released five studio albums, touring widely and ‘lurching between riff and abstraction’ (The Wire) since forming in 2015. Other recent exploits include playing with Chris Corsano as part of his 2022 Cafe Oto residency, and being one of two UK artists (with Mandhira De Saram) commissioned by Australian Art Orchestra to co-create and perform Fresh Water – Salt Water in Melbourne and Huddersfield (a hcmf// and AAO co-commission, also in 2022). Cath works with live electronics (SOMA Lyra-8 synthesiser, samplers, and small tabletop machines) in ongoing collaborations with Kate Carr (as Quartz Sand), Graham Dunning (as Grid & Robots) and Tullis Rennie (as Composite Mashworks). Be unafraid to open things up, a solo improvisation on tabletop electronics, was released on Fractal Meat Cuts in 2022. Cath’s sampler-based solo collage set appeared at hcmf// 2024, Sonics Hastings 2025 and Sacrum Profanum (Kraków) 2025. Magda Drozd is a composer, violinist, and sound artist based in London and Zürich. Moving between improvisation and composition, she builds music that inhabits in-between states: an electroacoustic approach to field recording laced with violin layers, orchestral and choral fragments, fragile voices, and noise. Drozd has released four solo records on the Swiss label Präsens Editionen, most recently Divided by Dusk (2026), with further releases on Hallow Ground, Flaming Pines, and her own label Rivercore. With Nicola Genovese, she founded the post-genre duo Sopraterra. IMPROVISING SAX QUARTET + VEASEY // TICCIATI 2pm, Sun 27 Sep Centrala We’re thrilled to kick off the Autumn season officially with a double bill of Veasey/Ticatti Duo and a specially curated improvising saxophone quartet! The format of the improvising sax quartet first came to fruition at the 3rd Stourbridge Festival of Improvised Music, organised by promoter & Fizzle legend Richard Bruce-Clay. Since then, it has been a dream of Alicia Gardener-Trejo’s to bring an iteration of this to Centrala. We’re beyond excited to announce the line-up for this quartet - Paul Dunmall (soprano), Dee Byrne (alto), Rachel Musson (tenor) & Alicia Gardener-Trejo (baritone). Veasey//Ticciati Duo (Beth Veasey - drums & Nika Ticciati - piano) presents a personal blend of contemporary classical music and first wave free jazz. Particularly referencing the extended works of Don Cherry, the duo’s compositions are an exploration of closeness and intimacy. Their relationship with experimental music is founded on these ideas, as an avenue for connection with both the audience and each other. The way the duo performs and composes lets either player reference whatever musical world they like, in whatever tone they like, as well as dig for new tones and worlds. They might drift through clattering bursts of noise, rapturous spiritual jazz-isms and spacious modern chamber music in one sitting; the players’ hope is for audiences to be left with the sense of knowing them quite well. Doors @ 1:45pm; Duration ~2h Tickets: £10.5 (£5.5 stu. / freelance musician) Available from our website (link in bio), or on the door. With thanks to @aceagrams grams for their support. 🟥 🟦 🟨

James L Malone and Tom Ward play the next Two Ship on Friday 11th September at The Crown House. Last remaining advance tickets available now via the link in our bio. If you’ve been coming to Two Ship for a while you’ll probably have heard Tom, either solo (one of our first events at The Nest, documented on a Raw Tonk Records cassette release...), or in a trio with his Portuguese band more recently up at The Beacon. James L Malone hasn’t yet played Two Ship, and we’re delighted to welcome him, forming this brand new electronics duo with Tom. James L Malone is a pianist, sound artist, and improviser whose work sits at the intersection of free jazz and experimental electronics. He has worked with the likes of Eddie Prevost, John Butcher & Steve Beresford. Tom Ward is an improvising musician, composer and computer programmer. His main instruments are saxophone, bass clarinet, flute & Music Thing Modular Workshop. Tom has collaborated on a number of freely improvised and collective groups including Cotovelo (PortaJazz), Spinningwork, Ma/ti/om, and an ever-shifting variety of duos and trios, as well as running groups playing his own compositions (including Madwort Saxophone Quartet and Madwort’s Menagerie). He co-runs the regular BRÅK night with Colin Webster & Cath Roberts, where he has played with such improvisers as John Edwards, Corey Mwamba, Charlotte Keeffe and more. He has toured/performed with Dee Byrne’s Outlines, Beats & Pieces Big Band, Overground Collective, Favourite Animals, Porpoise Corpus and many more. In 2020, he was heavily involved in Noise Orchestra’s Autonomous Noise Unit (ANU) project, building an easy-to-use standalone JackTrip device for realtime online musical collaboration.

This Wednesday at The Lescar, restlessly inventive and vibrant new music fusing modular electronics, saxophone and drums into fractured ambient landscapes and glitch-infused grooves. Swiss keyboardist Oli Kuster and UK saxophonist Dee Byrne originally collaborated in UK/Swiss ensemble MoonMot, as well as their acclaimed project Motherboard Pinball. They’re joined for this tour by Swiss drummer Xavier Kaeser. DOX brings atmospheric and unpredictable music that draws together Oli Kuster’s textures, dissonance and electronic pulses and Dee Byrne’s incisive improvisation, alongside Xavier Kaeser’s extra kinetic energy. This gig follows the release of their debut album, ‘Drowned Circuits’ on Efpi records. Dee Byrne (alto sax / effects) has been involved in so many of our best nights at The Lescar over many years, from Lume and Favourite Animals gigs, to her own band Entropi and the electronic experimentation of Motherboard Pinball. She’s also a member of brilliant UK/Swiss sextet MoonMot and also visited us with Tullis Rennie’s Safe Operating Space. Bern-based pianist, keyboardist and composer Oli Kuster (modular synths / keyboard / effects) performs with electro-pop duo Pola, and with his band Menschmaschine Kuster performing jazz interpretations of Kraftwerk songs. He has also composed music for film and released three albums with his own band. Xavier Kaeser (drums) is also based in Bern, and has performed across Europe including More Than Jazz Festival (Udine), Cully Jazz Festival (Cully), Moods (Zürich), AMR (Geneva), and BeJazz (Bern), as well as performing and recording with artists including Enrico Pieranunzi, Ralph Alessi, Django Bates, Bert Joris, Andreas Schaerer, Colin Vallon, and Alexandra Grimal. It’s a brilliant band. Please join us! TICKETS: £10 or £7 for students. Pay on the door, or alternatively get advance tickets by emailing lescarjazz@gmail.com or messaging us here.
