2024 was the worst. Never have I wanted more than to disintegrate into the earth, to close my eyes and disappear, to join my dead mother for one more hug, one more long, ambling, talking-about-nothing-and-everything conversation at the kitchen table like we always did. Some days it still feels like a nightmare I’m waiting to wake up from.

But in 2024 I had my son. The most joyful, sleepiest, curious, cuddliest baby. The baby I wasn’t sure I wanted even though we planned for him. The baby who, in some ways, saved me.

In 2024, my friends showed up in droves. Strangers and acquaintances poured their love onto me in the form of notes and food and texts. People shared their time and energy and money to help alleviate some of our pain, and at the time in my life in which I felt most helpless, most depleted, I physically felt their love. It mattered.

My goals for 2025 are very different from previous years. Though I’m working more than ever, I hope to slow down for once. I hope to start querying a book. I hope to continue moving through my grief in a way that allows me to show up for my kids and my husband. I hope I continue to see life as a gift, this lifetime as an opportunity to be better and kinder and to make other people’s lives a bit nicer.

Not to be morbid (that’s just who I am now), but we’re all gonna die. One day we will all turn to dust, the earth will explode or we’ll have a heart attack in the guest room of someone’s house. And when our bodies are taken away, and our souls have moved on to bigger things, there will be all this STUFF. All this unusable, leftover stuff that has no purpose anymore. If 2024 has taught me anything, it’s that the only thing in this life that matters is how much we love each other. How well we treated one another. How we made each other’s lives a little more bearable. It’s the only thing we can take with us when we go. Go love your people.

I am so grateful to have been loved and mothered by so many incredible women in my life, from best friends to bosses, but I am especially lucky to have been raised by strong, funny, curious, kind, thoughtful, optimistic women. Love to my grandma, the original Ruby, my mom, and my aunt. And lucky me, to be cracked wide open by my amazing little girl. To be her mother is exhausting and exhilarating and I couldn’t be more in awe of it all. Thanks to my mom who taught me how to love, and helped me become the woman who would be Ruby’s mother.
