Free Palestine Melbourne is proud to endorse Greens candidate Campbell Gome for the tightly contested seat of Northcote in the November State Election. Won by Labor in 2022 by only 184 votes, Northcote now has a fighting chance to elect a genuinely left-wing representative and a proud advocate for rights and justice in Parliament.

Campbell winning would be a vital counterweight to either the horrifying hard-right threat of a One Nation / Liberal government, or to Victorian Labor’s oppressively rightwards drift.

Palestinian community leader and Free Palestine Melbourne activist Muayad Ali spoke on behalf of FPM on the 18 October campaign launch, alongside teacher and unionist Ohad Kozminsky and Victorian Greens leader Ellen Sandell.

Muayad Ali:
“Our struggle for Palestinian freedom is a long one, and we understanding the importance of building lasting relationships with those who stand for justice and human rights.

“On behalf of Free Palestine Melbourne, I’m proud to announce our endorsement of Campbell Gome for Northcote. We encourage our volunteers to get involved and support his campaign.“

Ohad Kozminsky:
“Campbell and I are both teachers, both trade unionists, and both Jewish people who know the importance of standing in solidarity with Palestine.

“We understand how important it is to have someone in Parliament who rejects the cynical conflation of Judaism and Zionism.”

Ellen Sandell:
“We are seeing the most consequential election of a generation. We are seeing the rise of the far right — which we saw overseas and here in the form of One Nation — alongside an erosion of a living conditions under Labor.

“184 votes is all that stood between Labor and the Greens in Northcote last time, and closing that divide is more important than ever.”

Campbell Gome:
“Caring for country, caring for community: it’s that simple. I’m a local dad, public school teacher and trade unionist who wants to represent the people of Northcote.

“We want to send a message across the state that we are a people who value community: good governance, good public services — housing, schools, transport — that shouldn’t be sold off but should be owned by the people, for the people.”

Thinking back on @byronwritersfestival and all the inspiring great minds I heard speak on such a huge range of subjects. Lots of independent media journalists I follow closely were there as well as some of my favourite fiction writers and loads of new authors I came to learn about.
It was such a smorgasbord of goodness.
So much on offer, and like any great festival there are choices to be made every hour of every day there.
What to catch. What to miss. Great that some sessions were recorded. I HIGHLY recommend listening to Kerry O’Brien’s Thea Astley address which is now up on ABC’s Big Ideas, where he speaks about the perfect storm destroying our Politics. With all the passion and no mincing of words we expect from Kerry.

This is just a tiny insight into the 3 days I immersed myself in. Completely unedited clips of moments captured.
Perfection of posts on social media gets so exhausting right !? Or is it just me ?? 🤔

There may be the top of a head missing or a sentence cut short this time but you’ll get the vibe 🙃
