🤌🏼 I still have days when my nervous system has absolutely no interest in cooperating with what I know. Because understanding your nervous system doesn't make you immune to being human. Today is World Mental Health Day, and I wanted to share something personal about the role freediving has played in my own recovery. Freediving didn't erase my history. It didn't magically resolve the difficult experiences I've carried, and it certainly hasn't made every day easy. But it gave me something I hadn't fully understood I was missing. New experiences with my body.
Experiences of safety, agency, curiosity, connection, and sometimes the most ridiculously delicious joy. It gave me opportunities to encounter physiological intensity without automatically interpreting it as danger. To recognize when my body was protecting me. To discover that I could make choices, change my mind, ask for support, and still belong. And perhaps most importantly, it gave me experiences that didn't revolve around what had happened to me. That's something I think we don't talk about enough when we discuss trauma recovery. Recovery isn't only about processing what hurt us. It's also about having opportunities to experience something different.

🩵 Sometimes it's remembering your last really juicy dive when you're having an absolutely awful day. The way the water felt against your skin. The silence. The sunlight. The ridiculous laughter at the surface. That wonderful feeling of being completely absorbed in something you love. Those experiences don't cancel out the difficult ones. But they deserve a place in our nervous system's story, too. My research continues to explore how freediving may support mental well-being and recovery. But today, I'm speaking less as a researcher and more as a human being who found something extraordinary in the water. On World Mental Health Day, I wish you more than the absence of suffering. I wish you experiences that expand your sense of what's possible.

Berlaga di AIDA World Championship 2026 di Limassol, Siprus, Dimas berhasil menyelam hingga kedalaman 85 meter pada nomor Constant Weight (CWT) dan meraih white card, tanda bahwa penyelamannya dinyatakan berhasil.

There’s a good chance I might have to call off my dive today, due to an ear problem. But I’m heading out to the competition zone to see how it feels and to see if it’s still painful.

45 Meters 🌊. A new record for Qatar 🇶🇦

On 2 October, Qatari freediver Maha Alkuwari (@mha.qr) set a new national record at the World Apnea 2026 Depth Championships (@aidafreediving) in Limassol, Cyprus - reaching 45 metres in the Constant Weight Bi-Fins (CWTB) discipline among a field of 60 women.

Day 1 of the competition: CWT (Monofin): 105 m, a new PB!

Dive time - 2:32
Descent - 1:23, speed 1.26 m/s
Ascent - 1:09, speed 1.52 m/s

That was an incredible dive. Everything went exactly according to plan.

The only thing that surprised me a little was the speed. I felt like a rocket, even though I wasn’t really pushing hard at all 😂

During my last two training attempts at 105 m, I had some problems with EQ. Today, there were absolutely no issues. I reached the tag comfortably with plenty of air left.

So I think it’s time to start going deeper.
