The Heavens Gate Cult (1974-1993) Heaven’s Gate was founded in the 1970s by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles, who taught that Earth was a temporary stop in humanity’s evolution. They believed highly advanced extraterrestrial beings existed on a higher plane called the “Next Level,” and that only those who abandoned their earthly identities could join them. Over time, the group adopted an increasingly strict lifestyle. Members gave up careers, possessions, relationships, and even their birth names, replacing them with new names ending in “-ody.” They viewed the human body as merely a “vehicle” for the soul. In 1997, as Comet Hale-Bopp passed near Earth, Applewhite became convinced it was connected to their long awaited departure. Shortly before the group’s deaths, Heaven’s Gate’s website declared that the comet marked the end of their “classroom” on Earth and their graduation to the Next Level. When authorities entered the group’s rented mansion in Rancho Santa Fe, California, they found 39 members, including Applewhite. Every member was dressed nearly identically and carried exactly $5.75. Former members later explained that the money was considered travel funds, while others within and around the group described the quarters as symbolic “tolls” for the journey ahead. They ingested lethal doses of phenobarbital mixed into applesauce or pudding, drank vodka to enhance the effects, and then placed plastic bags over their heads to ensure death by asphyxiation. Each member also wore brand new Nike Decades sneakers. The shoes became one of the most infamous pieces of cult memorabilia and can sell for thousands of dollars today. After arranging the bodies neatly on the beds, surviving members placed purple shrouds and the final two were found with plastic bags still over their heads without the shrouds. One lesser known detail is that among the dead was Nichelle Nichols brother, Thomas Nichols. Nichols famously played Lieutenant Uhura in the original Star Trek. The group’s original website is still online, maintained by two former members. Disclaimer: This post is shared strictly for journalistic and historical purposes only. #cult #occult #horror
