The What, Why & How of Rejection in Contact Improvisation
Bushwick, Brooklyn
Sunday Nov 22 3-6pm
LINK IN BIO

One of the biggest shadows in Contact Improvisation is the experience of REJECTION.

Without the container of the length of a song, we often find ourselves wondering: Is this dance over? Is my partner still enjoying this? Am I?

Rejection shapes how we enter, stay in, and exit each dance. And it influences the rhythm and texture of the dance itself, surfacing as doubt, second-guessing, or careful negotiating of space.

In this workshop, we lean toward discomfort rather than away from it.

Through warm-ups, facilitated conversation, authentic relating exercises, simple role-play, and dancing with verbal reflection, we will explore the what, how, and why of rejection and notice what emerges when we name it and its motivations alongside our dance.

Applications are open for Fools’ Research Lab II: Compos(t)ing Realities, happening at Fools’ Valley, 14–22 November.

If you’re practicing contact improvisation, psychodrama, circling, authentic relating, clowning, butoh, corporeal mime, real time composition, process-oriented psychology, extended vocal techniques or improvisation in experimental & physical theatre, and would like to engage in a week of collective research where these practices meet and rub against each other, we’d love to hear from you. Together we’ll shape a psychospiritual game piece or ritual performance to offer to the wider community.

We’re told we can leave a dance at any time, no explanation necessary, however, many of us develop elaborate strategies to protect ourselves from rejection. If someone leaves us, we’re told not to take it personally. Yet, there are many reasons why we might want to end a dance and sometimes it does have to do with the other person, or least with what they are doing or how they are behaving. This knowledge, delicate though it may be, can offer us a valuable mirror to our own patterns and choices.

Participants should have some CI experience, however beginners are warmly welcomed. What’s most needed is curiosity and a willingness to play and be honest.

Good Vibrations: Micro-Encounters for When Socializing Feels Stagnant
Sunday, Jan 11, 1-3pm EST
Virtual workshop
By donation

When socializing feels boring, effortful, or strangely distant, it’s easy to become jaded or uninspired—even when the desire for connection is real. This workshop is a playful laboratory for experimenting with micro-encounters that bring depth and delight back into everyday relating. Through guided prompts, fun facts from the science of rapport, and a series of unconventional breakout-room encounters, participants will explore ways to generate warmth and authenticity even when they’re not “in the mood.”

Thrilled to offering this workshop thought Playing when the Playing gets Hard, an innovative virtual program from @deepplayinstitute 🤯

This is a bike park not an OF - it's true! Aaron and I improvising movement and sax in Bellingham at a bike park. Two funny things...
1. A group of tween boys were making fun of us (you can hear them in the last part of the video), but luckily they helped us name the piece "This is a Bike Park". I was honestly impressed with how bold they were. It gave me courage. Haha 💪🏻🌟
2. A woman came over afterwards and asked Aaron if he could play "Happy Birthday" on his sax for her little kiddo. He doesn't know how to, so has to decline. 😂
