My mantra word work of late: Expectation

Delayed expectation, delayed gratification, delayed share from end of summer solstice practice a week ago. 108 Surya Namaskar A - Sun Salutations for the solstice. Why? 108 energy centers, the map to prana, or breath, and also to the nervous system. AND to challenge my expectation of not enjoying the repetition of vinyasas and stepping into shifting of things through shape shifting. I’ve been rededicating to and also simultaneously softening around my yoga practice. Yoga is often the play of opposites and the container for paradoxes where things can meet and coexist in an embodied space to experience that escapes easy description with words and thoughts. When I soften or let go the expectation of a practice, I can find more space to explore, play, and go inward. This helps me find center and more lightness then when going outward and being out in the world. I can better be with what is, as it is, here and now, without judgment (or perhaps a far kinder and softer discernment)

Grateful to @darrenrhodesyoga and @yogaoasistucson for this summer teacher training experience that has re-connecting deeper to my practice and what have to offer.

Grateful to practice to the desert morning solstice sun soundtracked by the new, beautiful, re-affirming, @alcestofficial record. Metal + yoga = forever

What a gift to guide students last week at my Alma matter @emoryuniversity through a beginners yoga class!

Thanks to Catie, Van, and the @emoryalumni office folks for coordinating this lunch and learn for Emory scholars from various schools. I hadn’t taught in about 4 months, and a beginners, accessible teaching was a great reminder to get out of the head and into the body and be present in holding space with folks.

The word of the day was ‘sensitivity’. I’ve been slowly reading my way through ‘The Abundance of Less’ by Andy Couturier, which profiles daily life of different creatives, artisans, activists, and craftspeople in rural Japan. In one interview, a woodblock craftsman, Nakamura San, depicts sensitivity as the greatest safety net and the way out of psychological holes and tight spots. What I love is how Nakamura San describes cultivating one’s sensitivity through daily practices of noticing, attuning to one’s senses, observing nature and cultures around you. He then says you express what you take in through movement, art, writing, creation. Then, when things get hard, you have an awareness and creativity cultivated to push through obstacles. Yoga is but one of many ways to do this, but with conflict and atrocities happening around us, it allows us to not escape it, as my teacher @nedadraupadi explains, but to pour back into yourself so you can continue showing up; put another way, doing challenging shapes and movements on the yoga mat prepares you for sitting with challenge and difficult situations off the mat. It gives you practice and cultivation of skill with sitting in discomfort.

And yes, while I can be rather serious, yoga can embody play, community, and rest as well. In that spirit, I threw together a playlist that channels some of those elements for this practice. Sensitivity is a practice and living. Keep practicing.

what a lovely way to start the day! mindful mantra with @shonaliyoga at @ddyatl this morning was an invitation to explore visshuddha, throat chakra. 💙 this first of the higher chakras, represented by the element ether, the space between us, between our words, moving into the metaphysical… and yet it’s one we can all relate to on a physical level, too. who hasn’t had words catch in their throat? honor your truth, and speak it out loud!
