The seasons keep on coming which means my attention is turning towards the new year, and my 10-day anti-placement placement…

I’ve tried to explain it in the post, but basically it’s hanging out for a fortnight and meeting some of the best folks I know in Brum. Old school offline hangs. Lots of yap.

I’m always blown away by @designfestbrum, and this year’s 2025 Conference was no exception.

Here are some of my favourite shots from the day!

Such an incredible lineup of speakers, with the theme of Play, which really resonated with me, probably because I need the reminder do it more in my own practice!

BDF x PLAY Pt.2

So grateful to @designfestbrum for giving @definitelynotgraphics & @beth.rheanna the opportunity to take the stage at this years conference to thank some of the event sponsors and to give a shout out to @lborouniversity @lborodesign 🎤 what a moment! We are so proud of all of our students, and over the moon that so many @l.u.graphics students volunteered this year at both the workshops on Thursday and the conference on Friday … what a wonderful opportunity! Thank you @designfestbrum!

One of my fave introductions to BDF this year was special ‘guest announcers’ for our 7 main sponsors – and who better to turn to than some of the hugely talented students (and grads) we’ve been getting to know?! 😍

Massive respect to Christelle Zackwany, Jessica Dorman, Kat Sherratt, Bra’ah Awadh, Beth-Rheanna Gibson, Sahaana Shankar & Gergana Badeva who all felt the fear and did it anyway! 👏

Of course we could’ve featured so many more emerging talents, but it felt right to represent the Uni’s we’ve had most to do with over the last year – Loughborough University, Falmouth University, Coventry University & of course Birmingham City University. 🙌

a wee trip to sunny brum volunteering @designfestbrum 💛

...the uggs were in full use for the ultimate comfort while running around at the conference.

Had so much fun meeting some lovely creative geniuses and beautiful hearts. Feeling very inspired after a wholesome couple of days. Big thank you to both @luketonge & @danielalcorn for organising BDF and all the team that helped bring the vision and theme of Play to life!!

And, yes, I snuck in a cheeky porridge galavant before dashing back to Cornwall 🍓🥥

Scared of networking? You’re not alone.

Designer and co-founder of Birmingham Design (@bhamdsgn) @luketonge knows how intimidating it can be, so he created a placement scheme to help students ease into the industry and build real creative connections.

We spoke to six creatives who participated and their tips are gold: from showing up at events and reframing networking as a form of friendship, to finding paid work and building confidence through community.

Today's Grant Recipient is none other than the talented Christelle Zackwany, from Loughborough University. Christelle was nominated for a CDCT Grant by her tutors due to her positive, Cam-do attitude and commitment to her studies, and in all she does. She was deservedly awarded £500 from The CDCT.

‘I never imagined I'd make it this far in my design career, so I made the most of every chance that presented itself. I've made it a point to dedicate to my studies not just so that I may achieve good grades, but also so that I can fail and learn from my mistakes. I want to make the most of this chance by meeting more of my many peers, not just for networking, but also for genuine connections and building a larger community for ourselves. I love being able to use the vast facilities that are provided so that I can broaden my skills and gradually improve each one. In the last year, I've learnt about letterpressing and will soon be creating my own set of character blocks, allowing me to collaborate with designer Anthony Burrill, who advocates for social change. I've been encouraged to advocate positively for the graphic design sector, particularly for newcomers to the field, by reaching out to other creatives, establishing a space for us to informally get to know each other, and offering assistance wherever possible. Luke Tonge is the man who inspired me to step up, and through this I volunteer whenever possible, particularly during the Birmingham Design Festival, and I hope to continue this great deed wherever I may roam.’

Christelle is delighted to have been recognised by her tutors and The CDCT, and plans to use the Grant to pay for more tools to further develop her love of printing, frame by frame animations and film photography 🙌

*UPDATE* All spaces have been filled – thanks for the amazing response and brilliant submissions! Is almost that time of the year where a small group of students comes to hang out for a week or two @thejointworks (in Jan/Feb 2025) ..it’s an extended opportunity to ask questions, see how a number of varied studios and agencies operate, and make new connections in industry. It’s fun! If you’d like to apply drop me an email — and don’t use Ai / chatGPT plz.

NB. This isn’t a paid working internship, it’s a shadowing opportunity so will best suit folks local to Brum. DMs open for questions.

Lots of fun at the @bhamdsgn & friends makers market yesterday — officially opening our new @thejointworks space at 45 Frederick St! Great to see the place packed, and so many friends come thru 💛 …the @bhamdsgnshop is open Mon-Fri, 9-5 so pop in for a nosey and a chat, we’ll get the kettle on.

For the past couple weeks I have been on placement @thejointworks with @luketonge!! I have had such a FAB time chatting with loads of gifted creatives and asking lots of questions, thank you to everyone who took the time to share with us, and for your amazing wisdom and advice!
BIG thank you to Luke, for organising such a wonderful work (fun!) experience, being so welcoming and encouraging, and setting some great briefs to work on!! (and also letting me stay a few extra weeks to just simply make use of the lovely space that is the Jointworks)✨
Thanks to @sammyha.design for being so kind to chat with me everyday about all things illustration and to @neerajkainth_ for your design advice!! Feeling very grateful and inspired! 🤩🎨🙌🏻
