Japanese developer Athena(same that worked on the Dezaemon series and Strike Gunner STG)took the basic concept for a horizontal shooter and painted it with a hint of creativity, a high-impact presentation, two different great OSTs, and striking slick cover art on its JAP box.

BioMetal models its personality taking inspiration from HR Giger's works, for the enemy design, and R-type for the strategic gameplay elements. Add to the mix a well designed secondary weapon, and you have the fresh needed mechanic.
Humans are invading a planet lived by Biometals, an alien breed part organic and part mechanical, to conquer their natural resources.

The GAM, this unique new weapon based on blue rotating power orbs, is crucial and the real distinctive element of the title.
When activated, it sets in shield mode and starts to drain a charge bar, can absorb the most enemy bullets, but also has two offensive modes:
it can be shot in any direction(with a boomerang effect), or expanded in a cyclone of orbs that will cover the entire screen. Deactivate to recharge it.
The usual main fire gives us three weapons to choose from:
Standard vulcan upgradable to a five-way super wide spreader, a laser beam upgradable in power, and a wave shot that fires behind when maxed out. There are three missile power-ups, the straight ones, the couple that aims to the top and the bottom, and homing missiles.
The enemies are strong, fast bullets come from everywhere. The true key here is to strategically learn when and how to use the GAM at its best, or you're not going to survive long.

Graphics are very good SFC stuff: the Alien-ish pixel design is very well done, some backgrounds have several scrolling layers nicely drawn and with a wise use of colors; almost entirely oriented on dark palettes of greys and browns shades, succeeds to insert some pink and purple brights, such as in the beautiful third level.

Jap version has music composed by Yoshio Nagashima, fits the game perfectly with upbeat tracks as well as gloomy tunes.
But instead, the western release futures a catchy OST made by techno duo 2 Unlimited, that remixed songs from their album "Get Ready!" right for this game.

One of the most prolific Shmup developers of the time. They only made two horizontal scrolling shmups (that I know of). Know which ones? Or was there more I don’t know about 🤔

#SegaSaturday today with Steel Empire for the Sega Genesis! A recent pickup from a few months ago, I played nearly completely through it the first time playing it and absolutely loved it! I failed right near the end, prob the end boss. I quickly formed that this was a solid and very fun shooter with a cool aesthetic

Quite a pickup if I do say☺😏😎, here's everything! He even forgot some additional items he was gonna throw in for free, along with these controllers, which is a Dreamcast vcontroller, PCE multi-tap, and a pile of written Famicom Disk System disks.
The Retron 5 is my old unit that previously paperweighted, every port death-gripped itself to death and all ports quit reading. He stuck all OEM ports in as replacements! Pretty snazzy!
He has a number of pretty fantastic items still for me to grab, though I'd say not quite as awesome as this PCE unit. Well one of them kinda is, a Mega Drive Mega CD!😱😍

Truxton 💀 ☠️ like Tatsujin but different. Noticed some interesting things this week. Like if you play the Japan version on a Mega Drive the bullets seem a bit faster than on a Genesis. Same cartridge. Try it 🤔

Sunday is Tatsujin day where I try to disect the differences in graphics, sound and gameplay between this and the pc engine port while using the Arcade original as reference.

To strengthen the must-have classification of Eschatos on the X360, Qute included on the disc two legendary M-KAI WonderSwan shooters as inestimable extras: Judgement Silversword and Cardinal Sins!
•
Judgement Silversword was created using a game development kit distributed by Qute, the Wonder Witch, a Windows C+ software that permitted everyone to program homebrew games for the WonderSwan.
M-KAI won a developers contest with JS, so his title received a very limited print run, quickly becoming one of the rarest games for the system.
•
You can tell that JS is the progenitor of this series, it plays almost identical to Eschatos with the same couple of main shots and the shield mechanics. So cool fact: on the WonderSwan you must play this one in -on the go- Tate mode!
•
The shooting pace is super fast, with fluid waves of enemies that invade the screen, cool-looking and very well animated bosses, and addictive gameplay that pushes the player to blast away all the aliens as fast as possible. Remarkable for a WS indie game, and a gem of a shmup!
JS has everything, catchy chiptune OST, too. So well composed that reminded me of the classics 8bit shooters.

A year later, M-KAI released as freeware only, the pseudo-sequel of JS: Cardinal Sins.
Being a digital-only WonderWitch exclusive game, this X360 port is actually its unique physical release.
•
A.k.a "JS: recycle edition", Cardinal Sins reuses assets and sprites from JS, but proposes different backgrounds and brilliantly twists the gameplay.
•
It's not only about destroying everything as fast as possible here, but each of the 7 stages also proposes different objectives to the player: from "stay alive!", to "Do not destroy 1-Up icons" and so on.
•
The difficulty is even harder than JS, with more and faster bullets, and fiercer enemies. It's an unbelievable tech effort by the WS, with a solid audio department with many remixed tracks from JS.
