One of the best parts of being a speech and debate coach is knowing that not every moment has to be serious. Leadership is also about creating opportunities for these young adults to step outside their comfort zones, experience other cultures with respect and appreciation, and see more of the world around them. Beyond the speeches, competitions, and trophies, it’s about creating experiences, building connections, and giving them memories that will last a lifetime. Nashville was one of those experiences that stood out the most this year! What a team!

This year will make my 11th year teaching at the college level, and what a journey it has been! However, I need to give a shout to year number 10! Over the past decade, I’ve taught 150+ college classes across different areas of Communication Studies, but the last two years have challenged and grown me more than ever as I stepped into my role as Director of Forensics (Speech & Debate) at Chico State. Quick shoutout to @chicodebatecoach who mentored me beforehand.

So, this post isn’t just about celebrating 10 years in education—it’s also a HUGE shoutout to my students.

Last year, we set a goal: finish in the Top 15 at Nationals and bring one of those big trophies home to Chico. That goal took us all the way to Nashville, Tennessee, where the results came in, and yes, we got 15th in the nation! Such an honor to see that happen for my students.

To make the journey even sweeter, @mezafernandaa finished 8th in the nation among hundreds of incredible collegiate speakers! We also got to take a trip to Florida days later where she represented California to compete against the top persuasive speakers in the country. We also got to checkout some of the attractions in the area and risk our lives doing so. 😭

I will say that speech and debate has definitely come with its trials, tribulations, long days, and even longer tournament weekends—but I have so much love for the students who have allowed me to be part of their journey, push them, guide them, and grow right alongside them. That’s the biggest trophy and win of year #10!

10 years down, 150+ classes taught, thousands of miles traveled, one national trophy brought home, and a whole lot of memories made. Cheers to the next 10 years and whatever adventure comes next.

So eternally grateful for my rookie season! I have met so many friends, mentors, and amazing people in general through this wonderful opportunity. I am beyond thankful for the results of nationals, but I am even more so overjoyed by the positivity, inclusion, and overall awesomeness that has been (what seems like) so suddenly brought into my life. For all the laughs, tears, and for all of the amazing people this activity has spawned! Thank you forensics! You have taught me what it is to be loved! 🐿️🐿️🐿️
