Summer state of mind

This was the longest summer. Not because it dragged, but because it was so full that every week felt like a month.

It started with Arsenal winning the league after 22 years. Then the Knicks won the title after 53. I’m not a fan of either, but it was kinda nice to see my friends who waited a lifetime finally experience what joy tastes like. It was also impossible not to get swept up in the insufferability of their joy.

Then there was art. Lots of it! The new Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. Caught the closing party of the Nigerian Modernism exhibition at the Tate Modern. Saw Amy Sherald’s American Sublime again in Atlanta. Back home, couldn’t get enough of the Seydou Keita exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum also can we talk about the Iris Van Herpen show 🤯, 1-54, Frieze, The Armory Show, and then the Architects of Liberation: Modernism in Western Africa at the MoMA. If you get a chance, see them all.

Got to see almost all my favorite people. Celebrated birthdays and welcomed the births of my new favorites.

The World Cup came to Babylon, and I got to attend my first World Cup match and my first US Open. Got to see the legendary HOV on his return to Yankee Stadium. Beyoncé and Nas too. Ayra Starr at Everyday People. A few block parties. Battle of Jollof.

And like the last few summers, it all came together with another incredible Unstoppable Africa and then the finale - Danj Day or was it Danj week.

Huge huge THANK YOU to the few people that gave Denda work this summer, whew 😰 cuz it was touch and go for a bit there. In the words of @lizloveshair, this was a generational summer. See you in 2036 Insha Allah.
