“In honor of the 150th anniversary of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (now SMFA at Tufts), the Tufts University Art Galleries (TUAG) presents a look back at the art school’s history” - the exhibition “Looking Back” is put together collaboratively by a bunch of stellar alumni curators and faculty. Im honored to have a 2-channel video adaptation of one of my video installations included in a section of the exhibition entitled “Performance, Pedagogy and Lineage” curated by the one and only ✨ @dellmhamilton ✨– this section places former students’ work in dialogue with the prestigious SMFA instructors they studied under: Marilyn Arsem, María Magdalena Campos-Pons and Danielle Abrams.
.
“SMFA at 150 Years: Looking Back” is on view July 28 - November 8 and the Community Reception + Anniversary Block Party is Thursday, September 17, 6-8pm.

OUT TODAY!

Center for Art, Design, and Visual Culture at UMBC (CADVC) is honored to present “Vignettes in 3 Sessions: KaMag at CADVC,” a digital multimedia publication that commemorates the December 5th, 2025 performance, "Vignettes in 3 Sessions: An Immersive Ancestral Experience" with KaMag (María Magdalena Campos–Pons and Kamaal Malak) in the CADVC gallery, and the presentation of “I am Soil – My Tears Are Water” (2025) as part of CADVC’s public art projection series.
The performance of "Vignettes in 3 Sessions" transformed CADVC gallery into a a multi-media, multi-sensory sanctuary combining spoken word, live music, sound design, and other sensorial experiences in an intimate, participatory format. This multimedia publication gathers multiple points of entry into that experience, with essays by Tatiana Flores, Maleke Glee, and Dell Marie Hamilton, and presenting multimedia performance documentation in video and sound.

The digital publication is alt-text embedded and available to the public as a free, open-access resource.

Thanks to performance supporters @artsatumbc, the UMBC Arts+ initiative, @circa_umbc, and @umbc_cahss, as well as to performance contributors including performers Dell Hamilton and M'Balou Camara, Tibetan Buddhist practitioners Xiaoming Zhang and Lawrence Galea, event producer Zak Gutzwiler, photographer Tedd Henn, and many others. Special thanks to designer Gwen Knott and CADVC Graduate Assistant Elle Jones for their efforts on the publication. And, above all, thanks to KaMag for the opportunity to host this work. ❤️
Check it out on our publications page or link to it directly at https://cadvc.umbc.edu/multimedia-publication/vignettes-in-3-sessions-kamag-at-cadvc-digital-publication/

Was it really four weeks ago that we opened and nearly 400 of you showed up?!

Thanks to the incredible crowd who celebrated the opening day of Summoning at our new gallery space. The show is on view for only THREE more days. It closes on Saturday, April 11. If you haven't had a chance to see what it's all about, plan your Praise Shadows visit now. We look forward to welcoming you.

A quick demo and they were off! Last night my class transformed their sketches into gelli plate prints @newimprintstudio.

It’s always fascinating to see how people utilize the same materials and techniques and then make it their own.

THIS FRIDAY! Plan to come out at 6pm for a one-night-only outdoor performance + projection at CADVC, UMBC!

On Friday, Dec 5, KaMag—artist María Magdalena Campos-Pons and musician Kamaal Malak—invite audiences into an intimate, multi-sensory ritual experience: Vignettes in 3 Sessions, created specially for CADVC. Vignettes in 3 Sessions: An Immersive Ancestral Experience with KaMag is an interactive performance created for CADVC. KaMag members of the public into a shared ritual environment—“a sacred space where ancestral energies transcend temporal boundaries, creating a transformative portal between past and present.” The performance unfolds as a multi-media, multi-sensory sanctuary combining spoken word, live music, sound design, and other sensorial experiences in an intimate, participatory format.

The evening debuts the new large-scale projection I am Soil – My Tears Are Water (2025), transforming the Fine Arts amphitheater into a communal space for reflection on ancestry, land, and healing.

⏰ 6–7 p.m. reception
🔥 7 p.m. performance

Week 3 of our Summer Think Tank considered how performance can breathe life into history.

Guided by guest curator @dellmhamilton —artist, writer, independent curator, filmmaker, and interim director of the Cooper Gallery at Harvard University’s @hutchinscenter for African & African American Research —week three brought together Black artists, scholars, curators, and cultural leaders to engage with performance as a mode through which to contextualize America as nation, geography, project, and myth.
Rooted in the specificities of Black performance, the cohort considered the need to rethink how performance art is developed, documented, and preserved and the importance of building trust in the relationship between practitioners and institutions.

On Wednesday, July 2nd, the public was invited to the Maine Film Center for a screening of film-based performance works by Hamilton and playwright and filmmaker Angela Counts @abariarts, followed by a Q&A.
