Purpose-built fighting revolvers: the Fitzgerald Special. John Henry Fitzgerald was an employee of the Colt’s Manufacturing Company during the inter-war period and in that time became somewhat of a mascot for the company. A pistolero if there ever was one, Fitzgerald was interested in all aspects of handgunning- from the B8s of National Matches to the grueling streets of New York. His book, aptly titled “SHOOTING”, was printed in 1930 and covers this broad spectrum of interest. While some concepts are dated, is almost required reading for any true “gun guy”. I was fortunate enough to pick up this first edition copy recently while attending the @coltcollectorsassociation All Colt Show in Indiana, it is one of the great prizes of my library. The Fitz Special is a fairly straightforward concept: a shortened barrel, cut-away trigger guard, and bobbed hammer. A “proper” Fitz would also have the butt of the frame rounded, although this isn’t an absolute. At the time it was introduced, the Fitz Special, especially on the New Service frame, was one of the premiere fighting guns a man could have. Notorious gunfighter Charlie Askins Jr. noted that the Fitz concept was one of the best “belly guns” a man could have. Rex Applegate was known to have carried his Fitz Special (a personal gift from the man himself) well into his later years. Unfortunately, this Fitz is no more than an inspired build from the period, which wasn’t uncommon. Its barrel is longer than what would be most often seen on a factory Fitz’s New Service, although whoever did the work properly regulated the sights for dead-nuts accuracy at 15 yards. Although it is a tired gun, it’s one that I have remained quite fond of since finding it in a Montana gun shop while on a roadtrip with Hack. For added style, my newest watch addition, a 1949 Rolex “Bubbleback”, snagged from the good folks at @delraywatch seemed most proper for this old school carry piece. • #wheelgunwednesday

Once I was asked, “so, you’re a bullpup guy?” I responded: no, I’m a Steyr AUG guy. The Steyr AUG is one of the few guns that is both “vintage” and “space age”- all at the same time. Even original examples, like this 1986-manufactured A1 that I scored from @rfr_overton, look like they belong on the front lines of a Starship Troopers movie rather than having been built the same year as the Challenger disaster. In its day, the AUG was the cutting edge of technology, especially compared to many of the post-WW2 battle rifles fielded. The AUG is compact, lightweight (especially the A1), and reliable, without sacrificing velocity due to its bullpup design. Unlike other service rifles, the was also one of the first production service rifles to offer an integrated magnified optic, something that my buddy Ken Hackathorn noted made the Austrian bullpup quite popular in the days of Soldier of Fortune matches. However, barring the gun’s accuracy, reliability and build quality, the thing that impresses me most about the AUG is its simplicity. In less than a minute, you can have the gun down to its trigger pack, or (in my case) quickly pull the barrel to make for a nice travel package in my new @observercollection See-Bag. Even with my deep-rooted love of Americana, the Steyr AUG is a gun that has just captured my imagination in a way I can’t quite explain. I cannot express how happy I am to finally add an early example to my collection.

Today the #watchoftheday🔥 is Omega Speedmaster Professional "From Moon to Mars" The OMEGA Speedmaster is one of OMEGA’s most iconic timepieces. Having been a part of all six lunar missions, the legendary Speedmaster is an impressive representation of the brand’s adventurous pioneering spirit. This OMEGA Speedmaster “From Moon to Mars" Chronograph features a black dial graced by a small seconds sub-dial, a 30-minute recorder and 12-hour recorder, and protected by a hesalite crystal. The sub-dials are cleverly designed as Earth, Mars and the Moon. The black bezel, with its tachymetric scale, is mounted on a 42 mm stainless steel case and presented on a matching bracelet. At the heart of this timepiece is OMEGA’s mechanical calibre 1861, the famous manual-winding movement that was worn on the Moon. Description from OMEGA website. For me, part of the beauty of collecting watches lies in the unexpected. If I were handed a long list of watches and asked to pick the one I’d enjoy most, I doubt a ~1960s, 33mm cushion case Girard-Perregaux would be my first instinct. And yet, here we are. This watch is a genuine pleasure to wear. I think that’s as much a product of its individual parts as it is the sum of them. Start with the case. The cushion shape is deceptive in the best way. At 32x36mm on paper, it wears noticeably larger on the wrist than the dimensions suggest. Then there’s the dial. For something 60+ years old, the condition is nothing short of immaculate. Look closer and you’ll notice a subtle horizontal brushing that when caught in the right light gives the surface a quiet dimensionality that isn’t immediately obvious. Pair that with the iconic GP logo and full brand name beneath it and the whole thing carries a quiet elegance that’s hard to manufacture. Then there’s the pedigree, which in my view is genuinely undervalued. Girard-Perregaux is one of Switzerland’s most storied watchmakers, with a legacy built on both mechanical excellence and enduring design. When you put this on your wrist, you’re wearing something that has already survived the better part of a century and has every reason to survive another. I’d love nothing more than to see collectors from all walks of life start giving pieces like this the attention they deserve. The value here is real and I find it hard to believe they will fly under the radar like this forever. #vintagewatches #watchcollector #girardperregaux #watchfam #watchesofinstagram
