Too brown for the white people. Too white for the brown people.

Growing up caught between those two identities wasn’t always funny for Pakkz.

As a kid, it genuinely upset him.

But eventually, something changed.

His grandad was the joker of the family — always making silly jokes and getting everyone laughing.

Pakkz started copying him.

And slowly, humour became the way he dealt with the things that used to hurt him.

Instead of allowing comments about his identity to upset him, he learnt how to make people laugh.

That eventually led to his love for comedians like Russell Howard and Jimmy Carr.

It’s interesting how the characteristics we associate with someone as an adult can sometimes trace all the way back to how they learnt to cope as a child.

💬 Did you use humour to deal with difficult situations growing up?

“I used to think if you’re gonna wear a hijab, you might as well always wear it.”

Pakkz explains how his perspective on this changed.

It’s easy to look at someone else’s religious journey from the outside and question why they aren’t doing something perfectly.

But what about the progress you don’t see?

Pakkz uses his own prayers as an example.

He prays five times a day, but admits he doesn’t always manage to pray each one on time.

So why would he look at a woman who regularly wears hijab but occasionally doesn’t and ignore all the times she is trying?

Especially when wearing hijab can make someone’s Muslim identity immediately visible to everyone around them.

His perspective now is simple:

Don’t let someone’s imperfections make you ignore their effort.

Everyone’s journey looks different.

💬 Do we put too much pressure on people to practise religion perfectly instead of recognising progress?

Imagine skipping mosque class for an HOUR… only for your dad to go inside and speak to the imam. 💀

Pakkz genuinely thought he’d cracked the system as a kid.

Pretend to walk into mosque.

Spend the entire lesson walking around the block.

Come back at exactly the right time.

Nobody will ever know. 🤝

Then Dad says:

“I just need to go pay the imam.”

😭😭😭

He’s sitting in the car stressing because he knows the imam is about to expose the entire operation.

And sure enough:

“You haven’t been here?”

Caught immediately. 💀

The best part? His dad basically tells him he could’ve just said he didn’t want to go.

One hour walking around the block for absolutely nothing. 😂

💬 What’s the funniest thing you tried hiding from your parents growing up?

“Islam’s a religion for imperfectionists.”

This became one of the deeper conversations from our episode with Pakkz.

We spoke about free will, making mistakes and forgiveness.

Human beings have choices.

Sometimes we make the right one.

Sometimes we don’t.

And none of us goes through life getting everything right.

That’s why the idea of forgiveness became such an important part of this conversation.

Especially when so much religious discussion online seems to focus on identifying what everybody else is doing wrong.

Maybe faith isn’t about presenting yourself as perfect.

Maybe it’s about what you choose to do, how you respond when you get things wrong and continuing the journey.

💬 Do we sometimes expect religious people to be perfect instead of accepting that everyone makes mistakes?

Too brown for one side. Too white for the other.

At school, Pakkz was the “brown boy” and faced racist names because of his background.

Then he’d be around his own community and suddenly he was the “white boy” because he didn’t speak Urdu like the rest of his family.

It’s an experience so many British South Asians can relate to.

You grow up in Britain, but you’re constantly reminded that you’re brown.

Then you step into your own culture and sometimes you’re made to feel like you’re not brown enough.

You’re left somewhere in the middle trying to work out where you actually belong.

And that feeling is exactly why we called this podcast Between Cultures.

💬 Did you ever feel “too white” for your culture but “too brown” everywhere else?

“You see me drinking… does that mean I’m automatically going to hell?”

Pakkz brings the conversation back to his own experiences rather than judging somebody else’s.

He drank for around two years before eventually deciding it wasn’t for him and stopping.

His point isn’t that drinking was right.

It’s:

If I have my own sins, who am I to sit here and rank yours?

Throughout our conversation with Pakkz, we kept coming back to how easily religion can become about judging other people’s behaviour — particularly online.

Someone drinks.
Someone dresses differently.
Someone has a different sexuality.

And suddenly strangers feel qualified to make huge judgements about that person’s faith or character based on one part of their life.

Pakkz’s perspective is much simpler:

Focus on your own relationship with your faith before trying to judge somebody else’s.

💬 Has social media made religious judgement worse?

“In your religion, because I’m a lesbian… do you think I’m going to hell?”

A close friend asked Pakkz this during a conversation about religion and sexuality.

They joke with each other all the time — including about religion — but her question made him realise those jokes might have left her wondering what he genuinely thought about her.

His response was:

“Have you ever got that from me?”

And more importantly, if the jokes were making her feel like she was secretly being judged, he was prepared to stop making them.

You can have different beliefs from someone and still care about how your words make them feel.

Sometimes friendship isn’t about agreeing on everything.

It’s about making sure the person opposite you still knows you respect them.

💬 Can religion and sexuality coexist within a genuine friendship without either person feeling judged?

Pakkz really walked around the block for an HOUR instead of going to mosque class. 💀😂

As a kid, he decided one day he simply couldn’t be bothered.

So he came up with what seemed like the perfect plan:

Pretend to go inside.
Walk around for the length of the lesson.
Come back outside just before Dad arrives.

Nobody ever needs to know. 🤝

Then his dad casually says:

“I just need to go inside and pay the imam.”

😭😭😭

Pakkz is sitting in the car STRESSING because he knows exactly what the imam is about to say.

Dad comes back.

“Did you not go to class today?”

Game over. 💀

The funniest part is his dad basically asking why he didn’t just say he didn’t want to go in the first place. 😂

💬 What ridiculous plan did you think you’d get away with as a kid?

Pakkz opens up about the comments he sometimes gets when he posts a topless picture.

And he doesn’t pretend he doesn’t understand where they’re coming from:

“I know it’s not good.”

His issue is something different.

Why do people feel the need to constantly jump into someone else’s comments and police their behaviour?

It links back to our wider conversation about people ranking sins — where the things other people do can suddenly seem far worse than the things happening in our own lives.

There’s a difference between genuinely trying to help someone and simply wanting to point out what they’re doing wrong.

Sometimes, as Pakkz puts it:

“Chill out on your own thing.” 😂

💬 Do religious call-outs online actually help anyone?

Are we more comfortable judging someone else’s sins than acknowledging our own? 👀

Pakkz raises the idea of selective judgement within religious communities.

Someone might strongly criticise another person for something they personally disagree with…

But when their own friends drink, do balloons or do other things prohibited within their faith, the reaction can suddenly be very different.

Why?

Pakkz’s point is that sometimes we create our own hierarchy of sins based on what we personally do and don’t do.

And apparently when you get to the top of that hierarchy…

Pork enters the conversation. 💀😂

It turned into a funny moment, but there’s a genuine question underneath it:

Why is someone else’s behaviour sometimes easier to judge than our own?

💬 Do you think selective judgement is a problem within religious communities?

Can you disagree with something religiously while still being there for the person?

Pakkz brings up a Muslim youth worker he saw being criticised online for wearing an LGBTQ+ badge while working with young people.

But there was a reason behind it.

Some LGBTQ+ young people may already be struggling with acceptance at home, and the badge was simply a way of saying:

“You can come and speak to me. I’m not going to brush you off.”

For Pakkz, there’s an important distinction.

You can hold your religious beliefs while still showing compassion towards someone whose life or beliefs might be different from yours.

Disagreement doesn’t have to mean disrespect.

And someone needing help doesn’t suddenly become less deserving of that help because you don’t agree on everything.

💬 Do you think people online struggle to separate religious beliefs from how they treat the individual?
