Denver Jazz Fest Presents: Azar Lawrence Quartet: Culminating Coltrane Live at Dazzle December 10 at 6:00PM & 8:30PM

Tickets available at DenverJazz.org

“[Lawrence has] sculpted that Coltrane-oriented goodness into the mosaic of his own mature artistry.” —JazzTimes

Saxophonist Azar Lawrence came of age inside John Coltrane's direct musical lineage. In his late teens and twenties he held chairs with Elvin Jones and then McCoy Tyner — Coltrane's own legendary drummer and pianist — appearing on landmark albums like Enlightenment and Atlantis, and recording with Miles Davis on Dark Magus. That apprenticeship shaped a sound built on Coltrane's harmonic language and spiritual reach, but Lawrence never stayed a copyist: over five decades he's carried that foundation into his own catalog, from 1974's Bridge Into the New Age through Elementals, developing a broad, gritty tone and an improvisational logic that's distinctly his own. The Los Angeles-born Lawrence, has never been confined by conventional genres or categories, though: His instrumental and songwriting work with iconic soul artists Chuck Jackson, Roberta Flack, Marvin Gaye, Phyllis Hyman; and the Earth, Wind & Fire is just as indelible.

“Culminating Coltrane” closes out the centennial year of Coltrane's birth with Lawrence returning to the source — the music of his mentor's mentors — filtered through everything he's learned in the fifty years since. It's a rare chance to hear that lineage carried forward by someone who lived it.

It’s been almost six months since I moved to Denver and the settling in process to any city always takes time, but there’s an added layer of emotion knowing I chose to move back to the US during this particular moment in time.

It doesn’t always seem to make sense to people why I moved back at all or why I chose this city.

What it’s meant though is I can put into practice what I learned through the PhD: healing from collective trauma requires connection, trust, and stability.

Person to person connection but also person to organization connection and person to other professionals connection. People need to see familiar faces, established track records, and reliable rhythms. When collective trauma experiences break and rupture community, trust, and hope for the future, the only way forward is through humanity, through stories, through time together.

No longer digital nomading month-by-month has meant I can return to a Spanish club, I can support the mental health work of activists in the city, I can meet with school counselors and other mental health professionals who work with children, I can begin to look for office space to open up my play therapy sessions again. I’m no longer an outside voice coming down from the ivory tower or coming from abroad and not local experience and asking people to care about this.

It means I can have conversations with people who work in the Colorado legislator that lead to them asking to read my thesis (something academia drills into will never happen) and see if there’s any policies that can be built. It means I can talk to local organizers about how they’re supporting the wellbeing of people on the front lines. It means I can show up as a villager.

It doesn’t happen overnight and sometimes it’s so overwhelming that I lay in the grass to look up at the sky. But as I learn the streets of the city on foot and begin to recognize market vendors and experience the heart of a city that aligns with much of what my life’s work is, it’s starting to feel like home.

A few moments captured during @denjazzfest this past weekend. 🎶 Over six days and 40 shows, the community came together to celebrate the music, the culture, and the spirit of jazz.

We're proud to have been part of something so special. Here's to Denver Jazz Fest, the artists, and audiences who made it all possible!

Did some last minute volunteer work with @denjazzfest last week. I didn’t even know that Denver had a Jazz scene, let alone venues that hosted those type of shows. The highlight of the weekend was seeing @emmalineofficial after I just discovered her a few weeks ago. Definitely going to be supporting these venues in the future.
