LIGHTWEIGHT MINI BUILD – PART 3

Could this be the lightest Mini R53 race car?

As the project came together, I slowly started to realize everything was heading in the right direction.

Then came a huge milestone: for the first time, the car stood on its own wheels. After more than three years of work, seeing it finally become a real car was an incredible feeling.

From there, everything started coming together quickly. The engine from my old black Mini found its new home. Carbon and Kevlar parts were fitted, the interior was completed, and countless details came together. Nothing was left untouched.

Everything followed one philosophy: as light, minimalistic and purposeful as possible.

Then came a setback. When I tried to start the car for the first time, I realized I had damaged the wiring harness while trying to reduce weight. Countless hours of rework with a new harness followed.

But my hard work paid off. The engine started, and the first drive was unforgettable.

Then came the moment I was waiting for: the car weighed 863 kg and 904 kg with 100% fuel. I had dreamed about numbers like this for years and couldn’t believe it — all the hard work had finally paid off and I had exceeded my own expectations.

The first track tests followed, and I was incredibly proud of what the project had become. Unfortunately, the first season was overshadowed by driveshaft and electrical issues, but I always came back. Even through all the problems, I could already see the potential at Hockenheim.

The following winter, I knew exactly what needed to be done: driveshaft upgrades, ECUMaster ECU, titanium exhaust, safety upgrades, and many other improvements. The focus shifted to reliability, but I still managed to improve the weight again.

895 kg with 100% fuel.

This year I’ve already been out twice, and the car is getting better every time.

Still far from finished. Hundreds of ideas left.

Next goal: under 800 kg.

Let’s see what a supercharged R53 can really do!

To be continued.
