BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE - one of the most original pieces of theater I’ve seen in ages. A new twist on a kinda one man confessional show, Christopher Moncayo-Torres, a delightfully confident performer, tells his life story with a twist. He utilizes his real, non-actor family in the show to work out their issues. His father flew in from NY to be there for his son. One of his sisters lives locally and appears as well as his sister in North Carolina and his mother in Ecuador, both via zoom. It’s incredibly funny and moving and as you start to do the math, you realize his mother and sister are staying up way past their bedtime to support Christopher in this endeavor. They want him to realize his dreams while he wants to use theater to bring his family closer together. Unfortunately the run has concluded, but damn does this guy have a future in show biz. Director Bernardo Cubria, a highly prolific actor, playwright, director and teacher, stages this piece so inventively. I love when I get the chance to witness people reinventing an art form.

BEST OF BEST IN DRAG 2026 - a hilarious and moving event which raised and astounding $465,000 for ALLIANCE FOR HOUSING AND HEALING and my former employer, APLA HEALTH. Our squad was there to cheer on our pal Danny Casillas, AKA 2018 winner Miss Texas, Reba Areba, who slayed in such drag as an Oil Rig, The Alamo, a BBQ Grill and killed it during her performance of WINDOW CAULK. She brought the house down with her F*CK ICE message on the back of her Alamo costume. She may not have won the crown this time but hearing the crowd boo when her placement was announced made me feel so happy and proud of Miss Reba. Special mention goes to host Patrick Rush, co-host and color commentary by Kay Sedia and Ida Dunham. I was really struck by the sharp writing this time. This was a beautifully paced, funny as hell evening. Every contestant shined and it was so heartwarming to witness the generosity of an audience who still cares about people with HIV/AIDS. Lovely to spend time with friends old and new and to run into my former boss, Craig Thompson, who is still the Executive Director at APLA. Go community!

CATCH ME IF YOU CAN THE MUSICAL! This medium sized theater had a stellar cast of 19 people on a beautiful, bi-level stage. Intricate choreography, great singing voices, and a wonderful performance by my friend @mbgriffith , who shined in multiple roles and really shined in the second act as a potential father-in-law. This ran for only several months on Broadway so I was really grateful for the chance to see it here. I loved the movie and this represents it well but will a 60s vibe neo-noir score. The 11 O’Clock number, “Fly, Fly Away” was particularly wonderful. Runs at The Colony Theatre in Burbank through October 18.
