A right-spiralling conch shell horn (_Turbinella pyrum_). Two holes on the lip have been made through which a cotton handgrip is attached. There is another hole at the top so it can be used as a trumpet.

Conch shells have fascinated people since time immemorial and continue to do so to this day. Apart from being admired for their unique shape and the peculiar sound they create when being used as trumpets, they are also embraced as very practical objects. The variety of ways in which they have been put to use is truly immense.

This is the story of how a simple conch shell travelled from the bottom of the Indian ocean, wandered the globe and ended up in the hands of a collector in the Netherlands. Storyteller is
Niek Loderichs, BA Chinastudiese student. Link in bio!

This beautiful sword guard (Mandarin Mansion Collection) embodies in its materiality countless narratives of global exchanges, artistic contaminations and fascinations, as well as questions about its origins, its makers and the copies that were made of it.
Because, this tsuba is not alone in its kind. In fact, we know of three versions of this sword guard, all with the same design. Most interestingly, they represent different levels of craftsmanship and detail.

Just like the ship it depicts, this story will sail through the elements, and we will shed light on the stories it holds. Would you like to come on board?

Story by Francesca Gammino who graduated from Leiden University. Gammino is passionate about Japanese art. It was a pleasure to introduce her to one of the finest collectors and traders of Asian arms and armor, Peter Dekker. This box belongs to Fresco Sam-Sin (Chief curator of thingsthattalk.net), and Dutch magazine Elsevier wanted to learn all about it. Photo by Guido Benschop

This box is a Qing (1636-1912) artefact. In vermillion, the box reads 上諭 or “Imperial Edict”. Inside the box is a smaller on a rectangular base that was used to hold the edict. The lid of the box is fastened with two bone pins in the typical Chinese fashion.

Such boxes were probably used to move imperial orders from the Manchu emperor’s quarters to the recipient, like a governor or a battlefield commander. It would contain a letter by the emperor's own hand, written in the vermillion ink that only he was allowed to use. Due to the unique palace memorial system where even the lowest ranks could send a confident letter straight to the emperor, one never knew what kind of information the emperor had on local affairs.

A notable Dutch smallsword with a chiseled iron hilt, made around 1660-1665, most likely in the southern Catholic part of the Low Countries. Among the small known group of chiseled iron smallswords, this example represents both the greatest complexity in design and fineness of execution. One mistake is made in the Latin inscription. It is that very mistake that gave away the provenance. Peter Dekker, normally a trader and researcher of Asian ams and armor, found the sword, and curated a story for you in thingsthattalk.net. Read and hear all about it! Link in bio (photo of Peter Dekker from mandarin mansion.com)

Hält man ein originales Wu Dip Dou [蝴蝶刀 | Jyutping: wu6 dip6 dou2 | Pinyin: hu2 die2 dao1 | Schmetterlingsmesser bzw.

Based on great feedback from Matt Easton (https://www.youtube.com/user/scholagladiatoria) and others, Blake Cole and I are working behind the scenes, enlisting the help of top experts to construct armor piercing arrows based on actual, antique Chinese armor piercing heads. If you'd like to see this happen, we'd truly appreciate your support. Please consider supporting the production of Episode 2 with a donation http://patreon.com/thewayofarchery

One of the Japanese armor preserved @museearmee_invalides (detail of the Kabuto, type Akodanari). It's a presentation armor, intended to be offered to a foreign sovereign. This one was offered to Maurice, prince of Orange in 1611 and was brought back to France by the revolutionary troops at the end of the 18th century. #armor #armour #japanesearmor #kabuto #edoperiod #17thcentury #samurai #japan #france #paris #art #artwork #artoftheday #metal #metalart #armsandarmor #armsandarmour #militaria #history #museum #picoftheday #photooftheday #pictureoftheday #instadaily #instagramhub #arthistory #heritage
