A sign of progress. Cassidy Johnson, Dean Tom Killian, and others met today to talk about the future of the last remaining semi wild spot on the @riceuniversity campus. I was so happy that we appear to have agreed that making our campus a major bird hotspot is going to be priority. With birds of course come the plants and insects and amphibians and reptiles. And we hope to make this an inviting place for everyone to visit and learn about nature and how we can still make a difference in our urban environment. So I’m happy. @ricenatsci

Prairie Plots by Dept.

"Prairie Plots is an ongoing, living installation on the Rice University campus created in collaboration with the School of Architecture and Rice Facilities, Engineering, and Planning.

The project sits at the intersection of visual art, ecology, and community engagement, conceptualizing an alternative to a fixture of American culture: the ubiquitous mowed lawn. Maintaining the appearance of the highly sought-after cropped, homogenous, green grass, can harm both people and the environment. From water-intensive irrigation systems, toxic pesticides and fertilizers, and noxious fumes from gas-powered lawnmowers (which are responsible for 24% to 45% of all non-road related gasoline emissions), the cost of achieving this classic aesthetic extends far past the financial."

At the end of a plan’s timeline, the real question is not how much got built, but whether the original discipline still holds. Windsor’s North Village suggests that it can. As the community’s final phase takes shape, progress reads less like an add-on and more like a careful continuation of the larger civic and landscape order. The result is not novelty for its own sake, but completion with intention.

What makes the North Village especially compelling is the way growth is being tied to ecology. Within the 47-acre plan, more than 26 acres are devoted to parks, greens, and islands, and nearly 10 acres to water, with trails and boardwalks linking the Village Green to the Oak Pantheon and direct access to the Indian River Lagoon. Framed by the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge and the Historic Jungle Trail, this phase extends Windsor by making landscape structure, not just architecture, do more of the urban work.

For planning and design, that is the interesting lesson here. A mature place still has room to evolve when its framework is strong enough to absorb change, deepen its relationship to the land, and finish well.

Sharing a recent flyover of the North Village neighborhood, Windsor’s final phase of development.

Construction continues to move along at a great pace. The new 13,800-square-foot Fitness & Wellness Centre has broken ground, roads are paved, and many of the boardwalks and a lake deck are installed. Only five homesites remain on the market, pricing beginning at $1.2.

Sphere issue 1, a print publication celebrating the Rice School of Architecture’s vibrant academic and creative life, is now available!

💿📀💿

Edited by Professor in the Practice Nathan Friedman (@deldistrito), the current issue of the journal highlights a dynamic academic year that saw the opening of William T. Cannady Hall, designed by the Zurich-based firm Karamuk Kuo (@karamukkuo); the renovation of James Stirling’s MD Anderson Hall by the Chicago-based firm Kwong Von Glinow (@kwongvonglinow); the launch of the school’s curatorial program, Exhibitions at Rice; a research platform studio led by #LuWenyu and Pritzker Prize laureate #WangShu of Amateur Architecture Studio; and a new collaboration with Iwan Baan (@iwanbaan) for the Houston Archive Project.

The publication’s design, developed in collaboration with the acclaimed Dutch graphic design studio Experimental Jetset (@jetset_experimental), plays with the firm’s new visual identity for the school—based on a flexible system of points, lines, and patterns—and echoes the openness of the design process and the medium of drawing.

Construction of the North Village is moving along nicely with the excavation of a lake and estuary, construction of a boardwalk that spans the lake and sweeps around a new rookery island, main entry roads are being paved, and the new ellipse-shaped park is taking shape.
