POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Myself and my Dad at my IADT Graduation at the Rds in November 2022. I was awarded a BA in Music and I was delighted to have him there to share my achievement on the day.

To me it felt like a lovely beautuful poetic full circle moment to acknowledge the influence that my Dads passion for music had played in my life journey .

My lovely kind sensitive loving nurturing Dad, Tony -as he was known to most - passed away on October 5th 2026 at Blackrock Hospice after a prolonged difficult battle with cancer.

He fought to the end and with great dignity humour and grace and was much adored by the wonderful hospice staff who provided essential palliative care.

Elvis Presley was his idol growing up and we grew up with his music echoing through the family home and our childhoods.

This passion extended to all kinds of music from classical to modern pop and as kids we would watch with bemusement and/or joy as our Daddy danced and sang in our living room to either the King of Rock and Roll or the latest 7 or 12 inch vinyl single he had picked up at the local record store.

He nurtured my passion for art music cinema and Manchester United FC (inherited from him and my grandad for my sins)

When I tried my hand at performing in acting and music through the years he was always so excited to hear about whatever i was up to often turning up to support me in person at various plays and gigs, proud and smiling, full of curiousity warmth and tenderness.

I was lucky to get to spend a lot of time hanging out with my dad not just in his later years and we formed a close bond through regular trips to the cinema and our involved tea and biscuit fuelled chats afterwards.

He took me to see my first film E.T. in Bray Royal cinema way back in 1983. The last film we went to see before his passing was The Odyssey in Dun Laoghaire during the summer.

He enjoyed every second of it, his eyes gazing childlike in wonder lapping up his bag of popcorn.

He will be greatly missed by me my mam, my sisters Tracy & Emma, family and so many friends acquaintances work colleagues.

Tony Mc Donnell has left the building...Rest in peace Dad ❤️

I was page boy at my uncle Tony’s wedding. He was best man at mine. He bought a couple of vinyl LPs for me when I was about six years old. I’ve still got them. A lifelong obsession with music ensued.
Tony was born Mark Anthony (and I went on to take Anthony as my confirmation name).
Pictured here on a trip to Memphis, he was obsessed with Elvis and a hugely knowledgeable and passionate fan. For his 80th birthday earlier this year, I got him tickets to see the EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert movie at the IMAX, which he absolutely loved.
Tony was a lifelong regular visitor to my mum’s house. He would call in for five minutes and stay chatting for hours, just as he had at my nan’s when she was still alive. In recent years, we both talked mostly about our kids and grandkids but the music was always still in the mix.
My heart goes out to Tony’s wife of 55 years, Sheelagh, his daughters Tracy and Emma (whom I am proud godfather to), and his son Derek. Condolences also to my devastated mum Jeanette and to all of uncle Tony’s extended family and circle of friends.
Rest in peace, Tony 💔
