Immensely grateful to get to be a part of this year’s Wind Up In A Lake with @wornandwound & @citizenwatchus. Such a fantastic way to celebrate 50 years of Eco-Drive. This edition had everything- some sporty chop on the way to the site, a gorgeous wreck, and a lost Aqualand.

The Spirit of the Dirty Dozen

There’s no shortage of vintage-inspired field watches, but few capture the soul of the originals. The new @vertexwatches M36 does. It’s smaller; it’s sharper, simpler, and more honest about what a field watch should be.

At 36mm, Vertex finally hits the sweet spot its modern M100 never quite managed. The proportions feel right, not retro-for-retro’s sake but purpose-built, a proper soldier’s watch stripped of pretence: the matte black dial, the luminous 3D numerals, the screw-down crown, and even the WWW engraving on the back.

The automatic Sellita SW260-1 adds practicality, though part of us wishes for a hand-wound version to stay closer to the Dirty Dozen’s Spartan DNA. The legibility is flawless, the lume blindingly bright, and the build genuinely robust.

The M36 is a compact, utilitarian field watch that doesn’t pretend to be luxury, even though it’s beautifully made. Price is GBP 2,150 (incl. taxes).

Tool Creds, Smart Tweaks and Killer Value

The @montresbianchi JB300 Profonde x @deepsea.edc takes the quirky Marseille-born diver and turns it into a mission watch with real operator input. Grade-5 titanium with a stonewashed finish keeps weight down, glare low, and scuffs discreetly. The left-side (destro) screw-down crown is a practical win and a neat nod to the original JB200. Legibility gets a functional upgrade too: two-tone lume (blue for markers, green for minute hand and bezel pip) prioritises what matters when timing a dive.

The titanium 60-click bezel has chunky knurling and heavy, confidence-inspiring action; it feels like it’ll stay put no matter what. Inside, the Soprod P024 (ETA 2824 architecture) is a sensible choice (easy to service, 4 Hz, 38 h) and true to the lineage of the ’90s JB300. The dimensions (41.5mm x 13 mm), the flat sapphire, and the compact case geometry make it wear far slimmer than the spec reads.

You get authentic heritage, operator-led details, 300m WR, and a full-titanium dive watch that behaves like a tool for USD 1,350.
