Derek Thompson: Finding Your People

Before there’s a career, there are the things that excite you—and the people who help you discover what you might become.

Derek Thompson has spent more than three decades telling stories across comics, film, and animation. His comics work includes Predator: Bad Blood, Aliens: Havoc, and Abe Sapien: Drums of the Dead, written by Brian McDonald—the first solo comic featuring the Hellboy character.

Derek went on to design creatures for Men in Black and The Mummy, create concept art and storyboards for Star Wars: Episode III, and spend more than twenty years as a story artist at Pixar, contributing to films including WALL-E, Brave, Incredibles 2, Toy Story 4, Lightyear, and Elio.

But every creative career has a story that begins before the credits.

In this episode of the Story First Podcast, longtime friends and collaborators Brian and Derek look back at the experiences that shaped them as young artists—from art school and comic books to Comic-Con, Batman, Aliens, Stan Winston’s creature shop, and the things they made together along the way.

It’s a conversation about enthusiasm, friendship, mentorship, collaboration, and the creative communities that help us discover who we might become.

Because finding your path is often really about finding your people.

Behold the incredible monster art of the great, @derekmonsterart!

Derek has designed/illustrated for film, video games, and comics for decades, including “The Mummy” and “The Mummy Returns” movies (among many, many others). True to his name, his page also has one of the greatest collections of monster art out there - including countless original creations!

If there’s a ghoul or beast you’re a fan of, chances are, he has an illustration of them!

THE PIXAR SUITE • pt.1 • studio store sketchbook highlights
.
at times like these, ✍️drawing is my answer ♾️✨ during my Feb. campus tour, I purchased this book. Art feels as fun as it first did- like a kid with a crayon🖍️- in exploration on these pages🌼
.
🌎In 1995, the intersection of arts and technology was a luxury- @pixar normalized that. Today, digital realm is constant.🌐Since 2017 it’s challenged me; where’s the line between me and it? How can it impact the world?
.
Now 22-years-old, its outreach has billowed- I’ve seen so much of the world through studying how best to use online voices.
.
displaced while in emergency housing in ‘24- it’s been my mode to me make lemonade from life’s lemons. surely along a road less traveled, but it’s made all the difference

Thanks to @derekmonsterart for letting me share these on my page. Please go check out Derek’s page as he has some incredible stories about each design. Go follow him and support his art. I just wanted to share some amazing designs for The Scorpion in The Mummy Returns. I really like the early designs and wonder if they would have been practical or still CGI. Either way, it’s great to be able to look at these and imagine what could have been.
