Zohran Mamdani Mayoral Campaign Organiser to address Derry Public Meeting.

People Before Profit is delighted to welcome Emma Bally, New York City trade union organiser, Democratic Socialists of America member and a coordinator for the historic Zohran Mamdani mayoral campaign, to Derry for a public meeting, 6pm Wednesday 21st October.

The Mamdani election victory shook up the US political establishment, showing that change is possible in the world today, especially as we see the horrors of Trumpism.

Emma will provide first-hand insights into the issues that led to the victory of self- described socialist Zohran Mamdani and the centrality of worker organising that preceded the campaign, creating the conditions that made change possible.

Cllr Shaun Harkin said, ‘We're looking forward to hearing from Emma and the work of Democratic Socialist of American members in the Zohran Mamdani campaign.

Mamdani's mayoral victory has created hope across the United States and internationally that change is possible.

In a highly contested election, New Yorkers choose the pro-Palestine, pro-migrant, pro-right to choose, socialist candidate championing working-class demands, opposition to fascism and war.

There are lessons for socialists, trade union activists and progressives in Ireland from the Mamdani campaign and the explosive growth of the socialist movement in the US.

Mamdani is Mayor of the city that hosts Wall Street and many of the wealthiest people and corporations in the world. They will not want Mamdani to succeed or for a socialist progressive challenge to the Republican and Democratic Party to emerge."

Emma Bally will join us in the Northern Counties Building, Waterloo Place at 6PM on Wednesday 21st October.

Spanish Civil War 90th Anniversary

Join us at the Spanish Civil War Memorial Plaque paying tribute to the volunteers from Derry and the North West who travelled to Spain to lead the fight against Franco and fascism.

Emboldened by Trump, the far-right, authoritarians and fascists in Ireland and across the world seek legitimacy and power.

We can take inspiration from all those who have stood against division, hate, and fascism, to make it clear again to that they shall not pass.

The 15th annual March for Choice is less than 2 weeks away! Will you join us as we march from the Department of Health to the Dáil?

Why are we still marching? To put pressure on the government to remove the mandatory 3 day waiting period, to remove the unworkable 12 week cut off point, and demand the decriminalisation of abortion.

The longer the government waits to address the shortcomings of the legislation, the more people will be forced into difficult circumstances, or forced to travel abroad. It has been 8 years, time for change!

🗣️AI/Data Centres Public Meeting - Thursday 8th October, 7pm–9pm at An Cultúrlann, Derry.

Come along to learn more about the data centres proposed at Foyle Port and the plans across the North, the wider threats posed by AI, and the NI Executive’s AI Strategy, which is currently open for consultation. We also have a great selection of speakers lined up, with more details to be announced soon.

For this meeting, it felt important to us to commission an artist to design the poster, especially given the impact AI is already having on artists and the wider creative industries. A huge thank you to @leoboydprints for creating such a powerful and thoughtful image. It draws on people’s nostalgia and love for the countryside/nature, setting the warmth of the cottage against the massive, monstrous presence of huge factory. The contrast of this piece highlights how these developments threaten nature, communities, and the ways of life as we know them.
