POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

We haven’t posted much about Iceland yet—it’s been such a busy season for Return to the Wild and Marina—but we can’t wait any longer! This trip was, well, you can swipe to the second photo to see how I was feeling the whole time. Big smiles captured by @leszek_nowakowski (our incredible photographer!)

The Iceland retreat turned out better than I could have imagined. With such an incredible group of writers and a country as wild and story-filled as Iceland, I don’t think I’ll ever get over it.

I mean where else can you take a writing workshop on Vík’s black sand beach with a quiet procession of Icelandic horses in the distance and clifftops towering above? Only with Return to the Wild 🥹🌿

Many more glimpses into this retreat, which was all magic and storytelling and delicious food, coming very soon! These are just SOME of my favourite photos! I can’t wait to share more moments with you 🇮🇸

Should we host another Return to the Wild Retreat in Iceland?! 👀 Hop on our mailing list to be the first to know!

We accidentally recreated Abbey Road in Iceland. (See slide 6)

The important question is…

Who’s Paul?

Also it was just me and my emotional support beanie against the world.

Thanks @re.turntothewild for the amazing memories and @leszek_nowakowski for telling us to wait before we crossed to capture this.

My heart is full after a week in the woods with some of my favorite people. I wish I could describe how inspirational they are or the magic that comes from being in a beautiful place with people that make you feel seen, but words will never do it justice.

Words written. Precious time spent with friends.

Until next time. 💕

I could try to come up with some inspirational caption about this place but I don’t think it would do it justice.

I think there is some wild magik in deschutes national forest that always gets in my bones when I visit and this year is no different. I was able to spend time with friends and just be present. I said I was going to get more pictures with people and failed so next year I am getting more pictures with people.

Farewell until next year Sisters.

My first year at Suttle Lodge, I was querying what would go on to be my debut novel. My second year, I signed the publishing contract. My third year, I got to bring the book and share it with some of my favorite people before it goes out into the world 🖤

Another great week full of friends and drinks and food and what I love most: putting words on a page that will reach readers one day. Grateful always x

“Micro joys are how we survive macro grief.”
This quote has lived rent free in my head over the last few weeks, but especially when I gaslight myself for feeling any morsel of joy when the world is so heavy.

I experienced a million micro joys over this past week while I was holed up in a cabin in Tennessee with 22 other writers. We laughed, we cried, we laughed until we cried. We were loud and quiet and vulnerable…and we tended to each other’s stories with an energy that only storytellers truly understand.

The past week also showed me how much the world NEEDS our art— these incredible stories to act as their own little forms of rebellion. To give hope and light when it feels like there’s only darkness and despair. To remind readers that there is always something worth fighting for.

I’m so honored to (hopefully) be a micro joy to these women along their macro writing journey…the women who are writing these beautiful, expansive stories that will change their readers forever. I truly can’t wait to have a copy of every single one in my hands. 💖

And so grateful to @kristindwyer for everything you do to make sure these stories make it to those readers. To make sure we don’t quit when our own light seems like it’s not bright enough for the dark. The ripples of impact you have will be felt for as long as books continue to exist.

P.S. - this is one of the only pieces of evidence I have from the retreat, so I guess that also speaks for itself. ✨

An incredible week with inspiring women that are all now part of my heart. Thank you Kristin Dwyer for bringing us all together and sharing story with us all. To all the amazing staff Eva, Emily, Jenna, Julia, Amanda, Marissa, and fellow breakers, this was such a special time and I'm so thankful.

Hiking and date nights and calling senators and spiraling; taking care of very sick kiddos and the world’s most troublesome dog. Writing and writing and writing. Gorgeous views and horrific news. Crying in the bathroom, mothering in the kitchen. Loving and worrying and trying and hoping. Being inspired and motivated and deeply moved by the incredible minds and hearts of our communities. Story breaking and music and art and being reminded that in order to resist destruction we must CREATE. Getting annoyed there’s a tag limit on posts and getting no photos with @kristindwyer or @jennaevanswelch !!! And always and forever abolish 🧊.

I’ve finally settled in my new house with my three rowdy cats and quiet bearded dragon, so now I feel ready to post about this amazing week run by @laurenmwrites bringing incredible women together for a once in a lifetime experience in Barcelona ☀️ I learned so much about the enneagram, and how it can be used to create fully developed characters, had my Cheetah Girls 2 moment in a botanical garden with the Mediterranean as my backdrop, learned to cook paella, and someone managed to dance the flamenco 💃 All things I never would have done on my own, and all while meeting other writers who I am so honored to know. I wish we could go back, and maybe one day we will 💜 #barcelonafoodexperience #flamencodancer #paellalovers

Who’s ready for season 2?

I cry-laughed making this. The Breaking The Story retreat is as deeply profound as it is chaotically unserious and I think that’s precisely why it’s so magical.

It seemed fitting that something so meaningful made it to the feed.

Two weeks ago, I traveled to the Oregon wilderness to spend a week with 50 other writers.

Grateful doesn’t begin to cover my feelings about the experience. The week was rejuvenating. For the first time in a very long time, I felt the spark of creativity, the pull to dive back into story. There was rest. There was connection. There was inspiration. There was time in nature. There was reflection, and openness, and vulnerability.

I left with new friendships and a new connection to this WWTS community that I am so thankful for. I left with over 20,000 new words written and a completed (but very messy) zero draft. I left feeling an overflow of ideas for what comes next.

I will never be able to put into words what this experience meant, but I know it’s a see you later, not a goodbye. 💕
