🎈Over the summer, we kicked off “Urban Plaza” in Maryland, a collaborative project through @designadvocates with neighborhood engagement organization @onemontgomerygrn.

The initiative focuses on sustainability, small business resiliency, and public activations to re-energize the city streets for summer – for, because of, and with the local community.

Thank you to project supporters @montgomerycountygreenbank, @mocogov, and local and state environmental and transportation agencies. Plus, the plethora of lively 🌿 plants generously provided by #EvergroLandscaping.

And of course, thank you to the Design Advocates team! @studioforny @overlayoffice @instamoodygraham @mkcarchitecture

Versatility is key at Summertime Gallery.

Created in collaboration with @designadvocates and the artists and organizers of the @summertimegallery non-profit, this multi-purpose creative space is designed to support neurodiverse artists, and easily shifts between studio and exhibition mode.

The team worked directly with the community to design custom modular furniture that’s both functional and playful. Desks double as display surfaces, tables stack to clear floor space, and every piece is light, durable, and easy to rearrange.

Despite the rain, the garden was full of life for NYC Parks’ Open Garden Day!
Design Advocate had a greenhouse photo shoot 📸, and we unveiled the GreenThumb and the Audubon Society, a bird mural painted by Marthalicia Matarrita that now brings even more color and creativity to the space.
We closed the day with live music in the garden, creating a magical evening we shared via Instagram Live.
Thank you to everyone who showed up and tuned in. Rain couldn’t stop the joy! Despite the rain, the garden was full of life for NYC Parks' Open Garden Day!

As an expansive practice, we are privileged with many opportunities for multidisciplinary collaborations with artists. We're highlighting a few projects from our diverse portfolio, in which the architecture is in deference to the creativity of our clients and collaborators.

1. A custom forest mural in the children's room of a creative family's Brooklyn townhouse

2. "Remains Clock", a site-specific collaboration with artist #MatthewBarney counting down the days of Tr*mp's first term

3. Summertime Gallery, a user-led design for a special space where artists with and without disabilities make art together (with @designadvocates )

4. Dutchess County art studio, a bent building in a field of wildflowers, made for 2 artists to reconcile their very different respective workspace needs and desires

5. A serene Manhattan residence for clients in the gallery sector (with @aandaarchitects)

As with everyone, we learned a lot on the fly during the earliest days of the pandemic. Many of those strategies endure, and gave legs to lasting improvements in the ways we work. One of our proudest projects from the time is the School Reopening Toolkit, designed through a mire of unprecedented challenges.

We worked with local elementary schools in Brooklyn to develop operational strategies, from wayfinding suggestions – whose easy systems we've since employed in other institutional architecture projects – to safety measures.

These toolkits helped get learners and educators safely back in the classroom, and entire communities back on their feet.
