Identity and web for Derive, a Manhattan-based firm of building engineers working on block-sized projects. The identity is based on the positioning of ‘Elegant Essentials’, revealing the usually hidden systems which enable buildings to operate. CAD drawings show layers of infrastructural services while interactions play with the idea of X-rays and revelation. The typographic system uses Bodoni, synonymous with elegance, while the ident dramatizes the use of data analysis underpinning the team’s work.

With my bff Karin whom I’ve known for 26 years—we met in St. Louis while she was a barista (now a famous designer!) and I was a first year PhD student heading off to Galapagos. She made me what are still the best macchiatos I’ve had. Nobody knows you like an old friend. Pure gold.

At the end of December, I had the honour of screening my short film MELONGRAY at @sohohouse New York as part of the @google Flow Sessions.

A residency by Google Labs where a small group of artists explored their emerging AI video tools and reflected on the future of these technologies.

Still grateful for the opportunity and for meeting so many inspiring people from @flowbygoogle @google, @googledeepmind and @google creative labs

I didn’t host Still Life last week because I went on a trip with some buds. HOWEVER, that evening I did take a walk, I picked out objects in the cabin and outside and I made a still life. It feels GOOD to think about objects and color and texture and what feels poignant for an inexplicable reason. I started to draw it and of course, my drawing wound up looking nothing like the still life but it still felt sooo good to be in the practice of painting on Thursday night.

Tonight @asifgetreal is setting up a still life at
@maze_workspace , like we’ve been doing with different artists all summer. Come draw if you want, it’s nice out, it’s a nice brain massage and it’s fun 🙂 bring your own supplies . 5-7 PM, $10

New and second of Pencil Pod is out! ✏️ 🎧

I had the pleasure of an enlightening conversation with Karin Fyhrie @designcurio whose mind I find to be one of the most fascinating and attractive I’ve encountered.

We spoke about art and identity, letting go of labels, training AI on childhood memory, and what it means to live a creative life with more intuition than control. This one felt like candlelight in a cave, (hence the background)

Listen now on Pencil Pod. link in my « Podcast » Bio. ❤️‍🔥

BBDB Edition 15 is here! Join us on Friday, July 12, for an immersive exhibit of (@designcurio) Karin Fyhrie’s Dream Recordings, a series of mysterious and disorienting visual journeys documenting the artist and AI collaborating over many evenings. In this illogical and unfamiliar exchange, Karin navigates the powerful influences of AI’s deep learning models without losing her own perspective. The result is a surreal stream of consciousness where no single author reigns. Join us for drinks and a very special opening where the artist invites us to dream alongside this emergent technology and encounter a strange, almost spiritual, new practice of self-discovery and collective vision-ing.

“I’ll let you be in my dreams if I can be in yours.” - Bob Dylan.

Noteworthy summer moments:
1 + 2.) a spring fed pool at a private residence with Karin
3.) a visit from the third bear I encountered this summer, this time from the comfort of our living room.
4.) Weston practicing cello at pottery studio. Sometimes as a parent you feel guilty about your kid being bored and dragging them to all the work you have to do, but every once and a while you get a glimpse that it’s good for them and maybe will even look back on with pride.
5.) my baby
6.) living room in our house north of Santa Fe
7.) the only time it really rained this summer
8.) Weston doing homework after the first day of school at the laundromat
