🏃🏻‍♀️🇩🇪 Reflections of Baden Half 🏰💛

Despite my last post being… gloomy, there were actually so many positives to take away from Baden.

⌚️ Despite feeling so under the weather 🤧, I held onto half-marathon PB pace for my longest stint so far. That’s exciting.

🏃🏻‍♀️ I also managed my longest continuous run within a half marathon - no walking until kilometre 12. Usually I make it to around 8km, so this is actually pretty major!!

🤷🏻‍♀️ They might seem like small things, but I work bloody hard for these tiny signs of progress, so I’m going to celebrate them.

Because progress isn’t always one enormous breakthrough. Sometimes it’s just quietly stacking one little win on top of another until, eventually, you look back and realise you’ve come a very long way.

So I’m letting these wins be real. 💛

And also… just give that palace behind me a minute.

I RAN HERE.

🏃🏻‍♀️🏰 A half marathon at the palace, should my body agree to it 🏰🏃🏻‍♀️

Yesterday, with just two days to go until this gorgeous halfie… sneezing. Sandpaper throat. Nose like the Niagara. Head full of cotton wool, because sure, why not.

The situation is semi-under control, hovering somewhere between “mildly inconvenient sniffle” and “oh God, I’m sick.”

I’m still uncertain. Tomorrow morning, I’ll make the decision.

Not tonight, and not because I’ve laid out the shoes and pinned on the number and therefore apparently signed a legally binding contract with 21.1km.

If I wake up feeling well enough, I’ll go.

What I will do:

✅ Take it easy.
✅ Listen to my body.
✅ Start slowly and see how things feel.
✅ Be prepared to change the plan.
✅ And if it becomes too much, I’ll stop.

What I won’t do:

👎🏻 Force myself to run because I said I would.
👎🏻 Run through feeling properly unwell just because there’s a start line.
👎🏻 Chase a time.
👎🏻 Turn a half marathon into a test of character.
👎🏻 Mask how I’m feeling with paracetamol.
👎🏻 And I absolutely won’t confuse ego-driven stubbornness with determination.

Maybe tomorrow is race day. Maybe tomorrow is staying in bed and then a bakery breakfast 🥨

Either way, the goal is the same: make the decision that is kind to the runner I’m trying to become. 🏃🏻‍♀️

Out early this morning to beat the heat, and wow… I felt so good! Honestly, the best I’ve felt for a long time. 💪

The Coopah 2-hour run was a really successful one. I made the changes the coaches advised with relation to my fuelling and it worked brilliantly, so really pleased with how everything came together. 🙌

A massive shoutout to D3 Tape, genuinely the best for KT Tape, as well as all the other tape and recovery products they offer. 👌

Also a big thank you to Applied Nutrition. Their pre-workout, energy gels and endurance drink really helped kick me on and keep me going throughout the run.

One of the things I hear the most…

“I can’t do yoga, I’m not flexible enough.”
“Pilates looks too hard.”
“I don’t think I’m fit enough.”

Honestly? That’s exactly why I always give options in all of my classes!

Every class includes different levels, so you can choose what feels right for your body. Some days you’ll fancy a challenge, other days you’ll take the gentler option (I definitely do 😉)

The top exercise isn’t “better” than the bottom one. They’re just different options for different bodies and different days.
.
You don’t need to be flexible to start yoga. You don’t need to be strong to start pilates. You don’t have to “get fitter first.”
.
You just need to start somewhere & I’ll meet you there ☺️

35°C. 68% humidity. Chronically ill legs. Firmly in the luteal phase.

And yet somehow I’m wearing the expression of a woman who’s just been told she’s won a holiday.

I don’t even want to make sense of it. That would spoil the fun. 🥹

🏃🏻‍♀️🔥 Humbled by Nature 🪦🐌

Some races you run. Some races happen to you.

Last night I lined up for the @sandhoferstrassenlauf with a sensible plan - start out at a controlled race effort with freedom to fail, then reassess if it all got a bit much.

The final conditions were 35°C and 68% humidity, with a ‘feels like’ of approximately “surface of Mercury”, so I set off at a controlled effort rather than chasing a pace that belonged to a different climate.

The first two kilometres ticked by in 7:02 and 7:07. Not heroic. Not reckless. Just a cautious experiment in whether race day RPE was still compatible with human life.

The answer, as it turned out, was no.

By 4km, even my most pathetic feeble jog felt like a monumental undertaking. I felt as though I was dragging my limbs through every step. I was sweating enthusiastically, but not effectively. My skin stayed wet. The air felt wet. Breathing felt less like drawing oxygen into my lungs and more like trying desperately to inhale through a warm flannel.

At this point I abandoned all pride and adopted a new race strategy: survive.

The result was a massive 13 minutes slower than my last 10K, but I am choosing to view this as less of a reflection of my current fitness, and more of a scientific demonstration of what happens when an Englishwoman attempts endurance sport in the most running-unfriendly conditions imaginable.

The evening concluded with one of the most spectacular thunderstorms I’ve ever seen, which felt like confirmation that the atmosphere itself had been trying to warn me all along.

On reflection in the shower afterwards, while removing approximately 437 dead thunderbugs from my person, I realised that perhaps the conditions had not been entirely conducive to fast running.

Not every race is a triumph. Despite what is a very poor result for me on paper, I am proud of the fact that I was resilient enough to troubleshoot my way through that level of intense discomfort.

If I’d never known true heat stress before, I know it now.

Holy moly.

🏰 Two Castles Run 2026 🏰

A classic Warwickshire day out running from Warwick Castle to Kenilworth Castle. Always enjoy returning to my home town to run this one. Such a great race, lovely route (super hilly) and friendly runners and spectators the whole way. Really well organised - just missing enough toilets!

Despite the chaotic start (not my fault this week!), another medal in the bag, and it’s a beauty.

Steaming Down the Valley 2026 - done! 🚂

A catalogue of errors including being so late to the race that it had already started, having to sprint to try to catch up the 5 minutes head start everyone else had, narrow, muddy, single file trails that allowed limited overtaking opportunities once I’d caught up to the main pack, not realising how hilly the course was and the big one of not realising it was a 7.2 mile run and not 10k 😩😂

Anyway. Beautiful scenery (when I could take my eyes off the trail to avoid catastrophe!), steam and diesel trains to run with, amazing to be back on the trails running after the knee injury and second place in my age category despite it all!
