Design Doubloons from my newsletter. #1 - my friends got tattoos in this matching style. The white contrast on the black is so nice. And the rendering on the wrinkles of that balloon… (will tag the artist once I hear from them who it is)

#2 - this was a lamp not for sale at a thrift shop in Wicker Park. But it was caked in dust. If you’re not gonna let me buy it at least take care of it.

#3 - We went on one of the architecture boat tours of Chicago (which I HIGHLY recommend. It was incredible) but they punched our tickets with a little boat hole puncher as we boarded

#4 - Went to a Coney Island Cyclones game and saw the team get beaten to a pulp, but the neon sign for tickets was beautiful

Okay and then these are some “design treaures” I found around the internet:

#1 - @fortunatejoaquin ‘s illustration are deceptively “simple.” They’re big simple shapes and bright colors, but it’s so clear each decision was painstakingly considered. The clarity of the subject matter while also keeping things this pretty is so impressive.

#2 - @analogue.doc recently made a post about hotel stickers in the 1930’s. Hotels used to slap these on your luggage as you got off the boat. They’re absolutely beautiful, but also can you image the damage they’d cause to expensive luggage?

#3 - This one is a crazy rabbit hole to fall down. @ghostpantry collects and photographs old pantry items. It’s an amazing catalogue of all kinds of design inspiration and history

#4 - I didn’t think about it until I saw it, but of course shop signs have trends and fads like anything else. Sign maker @designify recently posted about current trends and now I want a sign for out front my apartment

I also include creative stories and links at the top of each edition. I know you can’t click these, but just a preview

One of the worst experiences in my life turned out to be one of the most positive.

“Hustle culture” mentality is so prevalent these days, but it’s not sustainable. The harder you work ≠ the bigger the results…

Overworking myself literally led to health issues, and I’m sure it’s something a lot of people can relate to.

This is your sign that “success” shouldn’t be at the cost of your wellbeing.

Friday knock off by the beach and a few thoughts I keep coming back to.

One quote that really stuck with me when I made the jump from corporate into running my business full-time was: “There is no plan B, only A.”

When I left a stable job at 21 to build my business full-time, a lot of people thought I was making the wrong decision. To be fair, some days I probably questioned it too.

Starting something of your own forces you to back yourself before anyone else does. You hear “no” a lot, things don’t always go to plan, and there’s plenty of moments where the easier option would be to play it safe.

But every setback teaches you something, and every challenge pushes you a little closer to where you’re meant to be.

Looking back now, I’d choose the uncertainty every single time.

Happy Friday 🌊

We couldn’t make this Sunday possible without our incredible sponsors and partners, whose support helps bring our event to life and fuels our mission of raising vital funds for breast and ovarian cancer research through the Mother’s Day Classic. 🩷 We thank them all very much

Some bits and pieces from the week that was opening @movenorthstudios. There’s still final touches and aesthetics to come but we are open, we are moving, we have a functioning toilet and filtered water station inside. I’m pretty happy.

The team that managed to do this in two and a half days left me speechless and beyond grateful.

Come visit, please 😂
