MEET THE GRADUATES

The Rietveld Academie Graduation Show 2026 (1-5 July) is approaching! We would like to introduce you to some of the graduates.

Minky Kim - @minkikikiminky - designLAB

I am making a time-based installation in which a tapestry is gradually unravelled by a spool. The structure of the reel references Korean folk object ๐˜Œ๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆย (แ„‹แ…ฅแ†ฏแ„…แ…ฆ), used for kite flying. Through this project, I ultimately question about how we perceive time, labour, productivity, and unproductivity. Crochet is often framed as a mundane and repetitive craft, but I see beauty in the slowness of this labour intensive process. So I decided to take it as a core element to elaborate its time consuming aspect and then convert it into something visible.

Michel & Keesย from wood workshop taught me many knowledges and techniques that the structure required. Bart from metal workshop gave me a valuable guidance on physics and mechanics that are a crucial part of the work.

People are invited to experience their own feelings while observing the slow process of unraveling. It could be anything such as vanity, nothingness, persistence, frustration(?), or the cycle of life etc.ย
