Caught up with a friend and got hands-on with his new CWC thegreynato podcast titanium special - a seriously capable diver and effortlessly cool.

Then a brief stop to see Arwind at Tortoise Watches for some neo-vintage temptation: a stunning 1981 Rolex Submariner ref. 5513 No-Date that Bond would be proud of alongside a white-gold vintage Rolex Day-Date with those deliciously aged lume plots. The sort of patina you simply can't manufacture.

And, of course, parked up in my favourite garage - which I'm increasingly convinced houses most of the world's supply of Rolls-Royces.

♛. Is your AD really ignoring you, or are they just busy curating a museum? 🤔🤔

I think one of my worst AD stories (this was actually NOT Rolex) was an AD once promised me an allocation of a limited edition watch (which was produced in such a huge quantity it wasn’t really that limited) and then rug pulled me even though they knew I had freed up funds for by letting go of some of my collection.

♛. Are you sick of the phrase “tool watch” yet?

Last night, just before I shot these photos, I was watching a YouTube review of a watch I’m hunting, and I realized I’m all the way out on the phrase “tool watch.”

It’s become such a crutch.

The dude couldn’t objectively review the proportions of a watch. He kept excusing them as “oh it’s because it’s a tool watch.”

And he’s not the only one. It’s common among “tool watch” enjoyers - everything must be viewed thru the “tool watch tool watch tool watch” lens. “Hey did you know it’s a tool watch?”

A watch is a watch. It’s either good or it’s not.

♛. How can anyone look at a Rolex Daytona and think “it’s just a watch”?

That perfectly lacquered black dial. Those silvered subdials. The bezel ring. The symmetry. The way it sits on the wrist. It’s just perfect.

♛. The problem with the gray market crowd is how loudly they push that "impatience tax." It usually ends up killing the joy of the actual hunt.

When I first went Daytona-curious (which is a legally recognized sexual orientation), I was hit with a mountain of advice to skip the AD. People told me to cough up double retail and maybe a kidney while I was at it.

Only @maximilien.color nudged me toward an AD who actually wanted to help.

There is a specific kind of dopamine hit from picking up a 126500LN at retail and proving the cynics wrong that you just can’t recreate on the secondary market.

The joke is on me though—I fell for the black dial so hard that I still haven't solved my white dial problem. I’m right back at square one with a panda-sized hole in the collection.

Help a poor Armored Wrist out: tell me which white dial watch is missing from my collection and what the “white whale” (see what I did there) is for your own collection?

♛. Genuine question: Been staring at the current Daytona for weeks trying to find one single thing I’d change to make it better.

Honestly? I keep coming up empty.

The only tiny itch that ever pops up is the lug bevels. Vintage Subs and GMTs had those crisp, defined bevels on the lugs — Daytonas never did.
If I had to force myself to pick one small tweak, I’d probably add that vintage-style bevel detail to the lugs. I recently saw the custom titanium Daytona that @artisansdegeneve made for Andre Agassi and the bevels are out of this world.

Other than that… I’m drawing a blank.

What about you? Any one thing you’d quietly change on the modern Daytona?
