Last Thursday, the JAC New Haven Community Service Team had the privilege of volunteering at the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen (DESK) @deskct in partnership with @islandspicellc Island Spice Restaurant, giving back through an afternoon of meaningful service.

We are grateful for the opportunity to support our community and make a positive impact. ❤️
A very special thank you to @islandspicellc Restaurant for generously preparing and providing the meals, and to DESK for creating opportunities to serve those in need. 🍽️🤝🏾

Community is about showing up, serving others, and making a difference, one meal, one act of kindness, and one helping hand at a time.

9/19, students and staff from the @yalesph participated in the 2nd Annual Community Crawl! Students visited and heard from key community partners (located locally in New Haven) about their specific work related to public health and ways for students to get more actively involved with them and the New Haven community.

Thrilled to be among amazing partners @unitedwayofgreaternewhaven @irisct_ and @deskct 🙏🏼

A huge shout-out to Emilio Bloch for helping to coordinate this amazing event!

Faxon Law Road Race recap. First I'll talk about the cause, then I'll touch on the race.

The Middlebury, CT Run Club & Global Partners came together as Team: Global for Good. 49 of us worked together to raise funds for DESK aka Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen.

The mission of the DESK in New Haven, CT is to serve people experiencing homelessness or living in poverty by providing food assistance and supportive services that promote health, community, & equity.

The fundraising goal was $2500 and we exceeded that by raising over $3000. That combined with Stop & Shops commitment to match our totals allowed us to donate more than $6000 to DESK. Big win & shout out to @chris2maxx for Organizing.

As for the race itself. It was a huge event with almost 6000 participants doing either 5k, 20k or Half Marathon. This is only my first year doing road races and it was cool to see the New Haven green full of energetic runners and spectators ready to take on the event on an absolutely perfect day.

I did the 5k and the start line was jam packed. When they sent us off, it took some time to reach the starting mat and some more time to weed through all the runners and find my lane. I actually think this helped me because it kept me from starting too hot which is always a problem. After about a minute of bobbing and weaving, I was able to pick up the pace and hold it. Nothing complex about the route but, running through the city streets among the crowds gave me energy. Pace was solid and I felt good throughout. Approaching the last half mile I really thought I would dial it up for a stronger finish but, I could not. I coasted to the finish line holding on for dear life on that last 1/10 of a mile. It was an extremely energetic finish line with what felt like hundreds of people cheering and ringing cowbells. I was happy with my effort and in the end I was able to get a 5k PB.

Afterwards the crew and I were able to have some finisher beers that were quite satisfying after a max effort. Free hot dogs & Dunkin Pumpkin Munchkins were a bonus. I guess it doesn't take much to make me happy lol

Overall a great day and knowing it was for a good cause makes it even more special.

Yesterday was AMAZING! @globalpartnerslp and the Middlebury, CT Run Club joined forces to raise money for @deskct . Almost 50 participants took part in the Faxon Law Road Race in New Haven, CT. Over the last month, we raised $3,171 as team #globalforgood and that amount will be matched by Stop and Shop up to $2500. That results in $5,671 being donated to Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen.

Everyday, I am driven and thankful for and by my coworkers, teammates, friends, and everyone in my life. I am honestly surrounded by some of the most kind hearted and beautiful people on this earth. Thank you all, there are no words to express all of my appreciation! 💙❤️💛

Global for Good and my Accounting Avengers from @globalpartnerslp were out the other night serving warm meals on a chilly and extremely rainy day at The Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen, @deskct in New Haven. This time around we were fortunate to have my manager join my team of DESK seasoned veterans.

This night was extra special. First, members of the local community are starting to remember and recognize us. It was heart warming to see my coworkers engaged in so many conversations with familiar faces and sharing smiles and laughter. Second, I got to sit for a very short period of time with a family who was ensuring that their young children had a warm meal and a nice dinner experience. When I saw chicken and mac and cheese all over the kids faces, I knew it was time for me to jump into action and bring those kiddos some extra napkins.

Another wonderful volunteering experience at Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen, Inc. , until next time! 6/22/26

Ten years ago, Karl Franz Williams had a vision for a space that felt welcoming, nurturing, and deeply connected to the community he calls home.

A Yale graduate, and restaurateur, Karl has helped shape the city’s dining scene for years. But Anchor became something more than a restaurant. It became a gathering place, a home away from home, and a space where people from all walks of life could come together.

What struck me most while listening to Karl was hearing how close Anchor came to not making it and how the community rallied around it. More than 1,200 people signed a petition to help save this beloved New Haven institution.

That kind of support doesn’t happen by accident.

It happens when a place becomes part of the fabric of a city.

Congratulations to Karl and the entire Anchor Spa family on 10 years. Here’s to the next chapter.

And on this Juneteenth, it feels especially meaningful to celebrate a Black-owned business that has helped create community, culture, and connection in downtown New Haven. ❤️

🎉 The celebration continues today! Stop by Anchor Spa, raise a glass, enjoy the food, and help celebrate 10 incredible years in New Haven.
