| Silence as Survival | This form of silence is connected to the right not to be fully understood, explained, or exposed to others. Silence here appears in two forms: it can protect personal boundaries and one’s experience, It can also be a deliberate choice not to speak and stay hidden. In this sense, silence is a form of protection and a strategy for survival. DEAFENING SILENCE brings together experimental films and moving-image works that explore silence not as an absence, but as an active condition shaped by catastrophe, power, refusal, and survival. The programme unfolds in three interconnected chapters: After the Explosion, Enforced Silence, and Silence as Survival. It traces how silence can emerge in the aftermath of destruction, be imposed by social and political structures, or become a means of protection and resistance. 16 September | 19:00 screening begins Césure @cesure.paris | 13 Rue Santeuil, 75005 Paris Full programme | link in bio

We are excited to announce DEAFENING SILENCE, the second chapter of Projet Betula’s screening series, following SPEAK VOLUMES. Bringing together experimental films and moving-image works, DEAFENING SILENCE turns toward what remains unsaid or unspoken. Rather than treating silence as an empty space where speech should be, the programme approaches it as something active shaped by history, power, catastrophe, refusal, and survival. The screening unfolds in three interconnected parts: After the Explosion, Enforced Silence, and Silence as Survival. 16 September, 19:00–22:00 Césure @cesure.paris , Paris Selected artists: Alexandra Kumala Aliaksei Rodzik @ok_kurdt Antoine Scalese @a.scls Aurélien Bernard @_aurelienbernard Erica Schreiner @erica.schreiner Guilherme Peters @guilhermepeters_ & Sansa Rope Katherina Sadovsky @sadovskykat Lisa Kusanagi @lisa.kusanagi Marie Ouazzani & Nicolas Carrier @ouazzanicarrier Marie-Josée Desharnais @desmjz @weavingidentityfilm Mia Yu @mia_yu_mia Nova Jeonghyun Park @nova_park_ Pauline Raillot @_paulhya_ Sarasa Kikuchi @__sarasa.k____ Theresa Maria Forthaus @theresa_maria_forthaus The event is curated by Daria Gnatchenko @gnatchenkoworks , Sofia Kuznetsova @roryoshe Design by Zhamilia Tranbaeva @jaycomeinpeace Full programme: Link in bio

“SURRENDERED” by @desmjz 📄Surrendered is an experimental short film exploring psychological pressure, dissociation, memory, and survival through embodied perception. Rather than following a conventional narrative structure, the film uses fragmented images, repetition, restrained narration, sound, and sensory disruption to evoke an internal state that resists straightforward representation. The film traces the threshold where resistance begins to collapse and the body responds before language can intervene. 🎞️MJ Desharnais is a Filipina-Canadian documentary filmmaker, writer, and interdisciplinary artist based in Montréal. Her work moves between experimental documentary, sound, archives, and embodied forms of storytelling, exploring memory, dissociation, adoption, diasporic identity, and survival. Her experimental short Surrendered (2025) has screened in Canada, the United States, and Mexico, receiving nominations for Best Experimental Documentary and the Experimental Vision Award at the 2026 Atlanta Experimental Fest. #shortfilm #identity #dublinevents #indiefilms

Next we have an experimental documentary short from Marie-Josée Desharnais of Montréal, SURRENDERED. “The film is a 2:30 experimental short exploring the body under psychological pressure through a non-narrative, sensory approach. It engages with themes of trauma, dissociation, and survival, without explicit depiction or conventional genre framing.“ Come expand your mind! Wednesday August 12 9PM-1AM @ @graciestaxbar for OST’s Femxle Filmmakers showcase hosted by @fm__lou !
