Located in Detroit's New Center neighborhood, United Sound Systems was a landmark recording studio that hosted a variety of legendary Detroit acts including Parliament-Funkadelic, John Lee Hooker, Anita Baker, the MC5, Bob Seger and Aretha Franklin. Notable as George Clinton's "P-Funk Lab," it produced such incredible albums as Mothership Connection, Maggot Brain, and One Nation Under a Groove. It was also the birthplace of George Clinton's global hit "Atomic Dog," as well as the album Freaky Styley, which he produced for the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1985. @yolikegeorge @chilipeppers @visitdetroit @arethafranklin #detroitmusic #unitedsoundsystems #georgeclinton #redhotchilipeppers #detroithistory

The Blue Bird Inn has been closed since the mid-2000s. Now the Detroit Sound Conservancy is putting it back together one plastered wall at a time, reinstalling the original stage it rescued in 2016, three years before it even bought the building. A $1.9 million Mellon Foundation grant is leading a roughly $2.8 million rebuild of the west side's bebop room. No reopening date is set. doing the research for our #ClubHeavenDetroit exhibition & installation @DetroitSound conservancy provided us with these 3 amazing Rapping Paper magazines from the 1970s, that focused on Detroit and north-west part of Ohio (Toledo & Cleveland) Bar Guide. The #GasStationDetroit at 7 Mile & Woodward in our “Gayborhood” (aka Palmer Park) was the bar/club on the ground floor (street level) where Club Heaven resided on 2nd floor. We have printed and scanned most of Detroit Clubs, Bars, articles & features from the March 1976 (First Anniversary Issue) of Rapping Paper. If you know anyone affiliated with this magazine, and/or any of the establishment or featured on the following ads, articles & photos, PLEASE connect us with them! This exhibit is in partnership with @detroitsound Conservancy, and you have less than 2 more weeks to view it. Our gallery is located on the ground floor of @passengerrecovery Community Center in Hamtramck. more ads, flyers, posters & things are on display at Christopher Street Gallery, and we’ll be posting more of the archival soon. @heavenindetroit @themarketdetroit @hamtramckqueeralliance @gigisgaybar @menjoscomplexdetroit @menjoscomplexdetroit @pridesourcemedia @metramagazine
