Carry the Songs in the Pulchuri Studio, The Hague.

Thank you to the Embassy of Ireland, the Netherlands, the Pulchri Studio and the Hamilton Gallery for making this exhibition happen.

It was amazing to hear from other artists the meaning they took from Moya Cannon’s poem Carrying the Songs, and the story behind their work. Such an array of different takes and across so many mediums.

I’ll give the meaning of my two pieces, both cyanotype on cotton.

“Dóibh siúd gan spúnóg airgid” - to those without a silver spoon.
A boat crosses the surface of the sea, emigrants who followed herring boats north, gutting the sea’s own silver for food. Beneath the boat, three fish move through the water, that silver, alive, worth catching, worth surviving on. On the seabed, a sunken silver spoon: inheritance, ease, the very things the emigrants sailed without. Here, it drowns.

“Seo mo leaba” - this is my bed.
A silver spoon, resting on a bed of seaweed. A symbol of ease, of being born with everything, drowned in the same water the emigrants crossed with nothing but their songs. Underwater, wealth and want look the same. The tide has no use for either.

In Tomfoolery art isn’t just observed, it’s consumed.

Violet Heffernan subverts the etiquette of the gallery, transforming fine art into an experience to be eaten.

Fourteen edible artworks, charcoal leek powder, and a b&w dress code: visual composition turns to flavor, and the observer becomes the experiencer. A temporary collaboration between artist and audience, existing only in the moment of its consumption.

Announcing the recipient of spacecraft’s inaugural Graduate Residency Award! ⭐️🥳

We are so delighted to announce Violet Heffernan as the recipient of Spacecraft’s Graduate Residency Award 2025. Violet Heffernan is a graduate of the Printmaking Contemporary Practice programme at Limerick School of Art & Design. This award aims to celebrate and nurture the creative practitioners emerging from the Fine Art department at Limerick School of Art & Design. Spacecraft offers developmental support for the awarded artist’s practice through access to mentorship, use of our project space, and support to put together a showcase of their work.

Thank you so much to LSAD and all the amazing staff who supported this first year of the award. We are so excited to be running this project. And a huge congratulations to Violet! We are so excited to be working with you over the next few months.

Since starting the residency, Violet was asked to write a little bit of an introduction to her practice: "I write this as if I am speaking to you. When I sit with my thoughts regarding this bio or something of the nature I wish too skip the pretenses of who I am and what I aim to achieve through my practice. If you wish to know you will find out. Instead I’ll share a thought which feeds my passion for art, the romantic view: that human nature longs for beauty, to witness someone’s thoughts become public through expression. To somehow write ourselves into a story in which we find a common ground. Alternatively, there is a mystery to the artworld, one that covets an extravagant vision. And simply, mystery can be found in the context of a question the audience has of a piece, asking, wishing to know why, when or how it was created. Shrouded in space, searching for the voice. It is these two profound areas I wish to explore. A hint: it will be driven by the very animal instinct we have in all of us… appetite.”
