THE DEVIL’S RIVER TEXAS. You never heard of it? If you haven’t been on the Devil’s River, maybe it’s time you plan it out. No wind, 30 Mph winds. Sunny, pouring rain. Hot, temps drop 30 degrees. Anything goes. This was my 7th time on the Devil’s and it never gets old!

They dragged their canoes through the shallows and hoisted them over rocks at times, but Pam LeBlanc says she laughed harder and longer during this, her fifth trip down the Devils River in West Texas, than any other. For more information on how to protect the most pristine river in Texas, go to the The Devils River Conservancy. Photos by Pam LeBlanc

THE DEVILS RIVER - Day 3 started out with us gathering at the campsite boiling hot steaming cups of coffee. Last night was a chilly night filling with some creature disturbances. Across the short river banks, we heard what sounded like a raccoon in distress, getting torn and eaten up by another larger animal. That was eerie!

Again, today we experienced more dragging and some more low flows. The iconic Dolan Falls was beautiful as usual. After we portaged our kayaks down, we all took the obligatory plunge into its cool deep pool. It was a refreshing dive. I caught a nice Smallie there from the top of the rock but lost it while trying to pull it out 20 feet. We loitered there for a short time to enjoy and absorb its beauty. About 100 yards down, I sat on a large boulder, happily ate lunch alone, and watch a 15 pound dark catfish swam towards me to hide under my boulder. Oh how I wished I had my rod in hand.

After a 1.5 mile float, we approached Three-Tier Rapid. We all ran it with no issues. Craig and I got momentarily stuck in the middle run for a couple seconds but managed out of it to end with a great run.

@pescador_cuervo caught a nice long Smallmouth. It was his PB in length so I kayaked to him quickly as possible. It was a good one! I wanted to make sure he had a great photo for his best.

Later that early evening, we found a nice camp site among the flat river beds. We cooked and ate our dinners while telling and laughing about stories with some sips of drinks. The night grew darker and the stars and galaxy glowed brighter. Shooting stars rocketed across the dark backdrop. We slept under some of the best starry nights you can ask for.

Stay tuned for Day 4.
