THE PRECURSOR: PORSCHE 936-81
The ideal candidate motor was found in the rubble of the cancelled Interscope Racing Indycar project which was on course to turn heads and top leaderboards at the Indianapolis 500.
Here was a compact 2.65 liter engine that produced beyond ample power under high stress and load, reconfigured to give up some overall power and instead return bulletproof reliability over a much more extended period, say, 24 hours.
The motor’s defining characteristics were derived from previous programs: A flat-six, as tradition dictates, and turbos from the Can Am program. Four cams, water cooled heads and adding a second turbo and intercoolers were developed during the Moby Dick program. Downsizing the engine was the legacy of the abortive Indycar program.
Engine compression was lowered to help reach target fuel economy, the turbos making up the balance, yielding 620 horsepower. Not bad for an engine half the size and cylinder count of a 917.
To prove the abilities of the engine the Porsche factory pulled their proven but aged 936 cars from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart and installed the newly developed engine along with a 917’s gearbox, beefed up after a string of failures from previous outings. In the capable hands of Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell, the Porsche 936-81 handily won the 1981 24-hour classic, Porsche’s sixth overall win. Back to the museum it went. Forever.
