By artist Craig Cundiff @craigcundiff In 2006, Hurricane Katrina ravaged my hometown of Chalmette, Louisiana. Witnessing the power of the sea wipe all by of my childhood memories off the map was life changing. One of the biggest lessons I carry with me today was molded by seeing how people across an entire community handle grief differently. The altruistic and the schemers. The affected and the effective. This piece honors the people of Chalmette using whatever they had, in this case a Sea Doo, to search for their neighbors in the aftermath of the storm. Before moving back to Seattle, @devin.liston cut his teeth in Los Angeles, where he became widely known for his work in acclaimed street art collectives before stepping out to concentrate on individual work in 2014. In his paintings and murals, Devin produces rich, multidimensional amalgams drawn from childhood nostalgia, sports and media culture, politics, the household mundane, and existential or otherworldly themes. Within his practice, there are essentially two approaches: works that are highly intentional and preconceived, and those of a more surreal, stream-of-consciousness variety. Both categories, though, espouse fluidity and are implicitly complementary. In recent years, Devin has imposed fixed rules for each work: first, all his work begins with a basic foundation and then develops from that; second, the rest of the piece is carried out within the constraints of the canvas or the working space. There’s a delicate wisdom and innate humility in discussing art with Devin. It could simply be attributed to his maturity, the years he’s put into his craft, or the assorted layovers on his journey — LA, Germany, Iceland, etc. It could be his reverence for education and a periodic urge to refine his technique through school and marinate in that learned community. It could be his esteem and service to close friends and other figures in the art world. It could also come from a commitment to self-discovery and the clarity that follows that challenging work. Or it stems from his work as a co-curator at @europagalleryseattle a role that demands different energy and a focus on championing others, bolstering the greater Seattle art scene. It might also derive from his selflessness and willingness to hold space for others. Whatever the case, Devin is a good hang, an introspective mind, and a purposeful artist.
