Meet Perch. 📹

Every rack in our new weightroom is now equipped with Perch, @catapultsports camera-based VBT technology. Here’s how we put it to work:

🏋️ Mean velocity for strength work like squats and bench press, where bar speed tells us how hard a set really is and how our athletes are moving the load

⚡ Peak velocity for ballistic work like weighted jumps and Olympic lifts, where the goal is to move fast and apply force quickly

Perch has quickly become a key part of our daily training for every one of our teams, helping us measure outputs and drive intent with every rep!

Better data, better decisions, better training. 🔵🟡

Just some pre-practice fun… I mean, prep.

@devin_sc_coach I think we had our fun today. Since volleyball is kinda our sport, we had to find a little different look than keepy-uppy to battle it out today.

Lots of good things here. Stability is challenged in a great, reactive way. As is the ankle/foot complex having to interact with changes of outside forces and the ground. Trunk, upper body strength, reactivity, utilizing leverage if you’re short, not succumbing to it if you’re tall… lots of good things going on here.

Double leg. Single leg. Same side battle. Contralateral. Front facing. Lateral… add the constraints that will work for you and get you what you need out of this partner prep work.

Stay curious.

🎙️ New Talkin’ Pitt Episode
How do we build better athletes without getting caught up in making everything “sport-specific”?
In this episode, I sit down with Josh Bray, strength and conditioning coach and author of The Athletic Blueprint, to talk about coaching, programming, and developing young athletes.
Josh works primarily with high-level youth hockey players, so we dive into how he balances the demands of an extremely specialized sport while still developing a broad foundation of athleticism.
We get into:
• Gamifying training to improve intent and engagement
• Building general athleticism in specialized athletes
• Physical literacy and exposing athletes to different movements
• Adjusting training as young athletes grow and mature
• Josh’s approach to foot and ankle development for hockey players
• Filtering all the information available to coaches today
• Why context matters when choosing training methods
• Programming around limited equipment and real-world logistics
• Knowing when to progress, regress, or choose a different exercise
• Why coaches should be more willing to share what they’re doing
• Finding balance and longevity in the strength & conditioning profession
One of my favorite themes from this conversation was that a good program isn’t just about what exercises are written on the sheet.
Your athletes, environment, equipment, logistics, sport demands, and coaching ability all influence what the “right” program looks like.
A lot of great coaching conversation in this one.

This week’s episode of Talkin’ Pitt is one every strength coach, sport coach, and performance professional should hear.
I sat down with Conor Cantwell from the College of William & Mary to talk about one of the biggest questions in coaching today:
How do we use data to make better decisions without losing the art of coaching?
We dive into:
🏀 Heart rate monitoring in collegiate basketball
📈 Submaximal fitness testing and athlete readiness
💪 Why conditioning should be intentional—not just hard
📊 Using objective data to communicate with sport coaches
🎯 Programming plyometrics for basketball and volleyball
🧠 Gamifying training to improve athlete buy-in
🔥 And a conversation I’ve been thinking about a lot lately…
Are we actually training athletes hard enough?
This wasn’t just a conversation about technology. It was about using the right information to coach better, challenge athletes appropriately, and prepare them for the demands of competition.
Huge thanks to Connor for sharing his experience and the work he’s doing while balancing collegiate coaching with a PhD focused on athlete monitoring.

What was your biggest takeaway from the episode?

Being able to learn from some great minds in the performance space over the last two Saturdays is a great reminder that these are the good old days of being able to learn and grow as a professional.

Learn from others, experiment with what they share, and then apply it to make those you serve better.

The more advanced your training age, the less impressive it is to me that you can hold a bodyweight plank for +1 minute. Had a great talk with @coryabergman today and that prompted this little tirade of a post.

Should we start there? Probably! Teach positions first, absolutely. Though I’m prepped for the rush to judgement, I’m standing 10 toes down on this one. For trained individuals, planks are unimpressive.

Now, if you’re doing them CORRECTLY, you’ll shake no matter what. It’s supposed to be a position that holds a MASSIVE amount of tension for the duration— but the amount of athletes (people in general) who plank and can hold a conversation and look like they could be there all day… whaaatttt are we doin?? Not generating any meaningful adaptation, I know that. If you’re out here holding a plank for 2, 3, 4 minutes… 1) waste of valuable time in my setting 2) at what point in your training are you holding any iso for THAT long, even with sub maximal intent? (Except if you’re in @devin_sc_coach ‘s program — sorry bout your luck).

So, what’s my solution? Constraints.
Create a situational overcoming or yielding with an Isophit or even just a loaded barbells on the safeties in rack or plates or dumbbells.. or even manual manipulation with a partner pressing on the hinge points at the hip.

Athletes automatically brace better because if they don’t, they get folded.

Am I saying this is for everyone? Read along now… NO.
COULD you start here… actually… yes. I think so anyway. But that’s not the point.

The trunk is the power translator (especially for my overhead & rotational sports & long-limbed athletes), so bracing and all kinds of anti rotation, anti flexion, anti extension, and anti lateral flexion have a prominent place in my program.

Let me know if you also train this way, or if you don’t, why don’t you?

Stay curious.

🎙️ NEW EPISODE OF TALKING PIT 🎙️
This week, Coach Devin sits down with Erica Lowery, Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach at South Alabama, to talk about her journey from a Division I volleyball athlete to a Division I strength coach.
We dive into:
🏐 How her experiences at Texas A&M and Liberty shaped her coaching philosophy
💪 The mentors who influenced her career and helped her discover a passion for strength & conditioning
📈 Training female athletes for performance, power, and long-term health
🦵 Front squats, low-impact conditioning, jump training, force plates, and reducing injury risk in volleyball athletes
🏃‍♀️ Her experience competing in Apex and how training as an athlete continues to make her a better coach
One of my favorite parts of this conversation was hearing Erica talk about the importance of continuing to train, compete, and challenge yourself as a coach. Her passion for helping athletes succeed is obvious, and there are a ton of practical takeaways for coaches and athletes alike.
