As summer slowly departs, I believed passion was running dry.

I remembered a time asking a fellow creator how he managed to organize multiple jazz festival on multiple mountains on a tiny island, you must have so much passion?! He said no, passion will only get you so far, then you need intelligent design, systems, and frameworks.

Driving alone up the mountain in search of the Red Shanked Douc, I realized the passion already ignited and burnt long ago, it drove me to establish an absurd amount of projects. Believing even 5 years ago that a record label around an endangered monkey was something that had to happen, and here we were playing the music we curated to people all over the world. @shankeddoucrecords was born, and much like the Shanked Douc itself we were living quietly in the trees, until anterior forces start to uproot our way of life.

However odd to us that things are changing as they do; an artist, a passionate driven “outside the box” thinker will always adapt, always grow and evolve into new forms, directions and pathways.

All in search of creating our version of paradise.

When I remind myself, where I was 10 years ago, a wandering soul- in search of a home, and hoping to Buddha, Allah, God, or Shiva that there was a more virtuous, creative and alternative way to live than what had been presented by the countries I lived and left before.

I had to look at myself, my past and current desires, and consider to suspend everything to see where a rest stop in Hanoi could take me.

Only by referencing my mental state a decade before could I recognize how far things have come into the direction that was designed. @airtime.asia collected the spirit of young, thrifty dreamers doing their best in the scenes they exists within. Some are more blessed than others, and some deal with extreme limitations, yet it hasn’t stopped anyone from sharing their sounds and experiences.

DEVIN (KR-BE)
Liège-raised Belgian-Korean DJ/producer DEVIN blends classical percussion roots with a passion for Rock, Funk (as a former drummer), and 90s house, techno, New wave, Disco, Funk, Soul, and Jazz in his DJ sets. A perfectionist known for exceeding expectations, he’s played under various aliases across Europe and Asia with top DJs like Carl Cox.

DJ OUCH! (Miniclic Records, funkON / CH)
Swiss DJ Ouch!, after early drum and bass forays, explored deep house and techno in Madrid before returning to Switzerland for music production studies. He co-founded ventures in Switzerland and, upon moving to Saigon in 2012, co-founded HRBR and El Barrio. He’s held music director roles and joined Miniclic Records in 2022.

DAVID DE BARCE (Blackcatsession / Digital Midnight)
David de Barce is a Spanish DJ and the creator of BLACKCATSESSION and DIGITAL MIDNIGHT, two events synonymous with high-quality underground music. He has played at major events alongside renowned DJs, establishing himself in the global electronic music scene through his diverse musical style and extensive experience.

Airtime Asia is an independent, decentralized festival and music conference bringing together underground radio platforms from across Asia in the coastal city of Da Nang and the historic town of Hoi An, Vietnam. Over four days, experience more than 20 events across 15+ venues, featuring 40+ artists, broadcasters, labels, and cultural practitioners from across the continent.

Night One: Thursday, Aug 13

On opening night, we head to one of Da Nang's most vibrant clubs: Blends, in the heart of An Thuong. Partnering up with Bamboogie, the local Thursday ritual for all things funky, Airtime adds a little spice from Phnom Penh and Bangkok to the mix with a jammie jam-packed night beginning with a listening session from the founding father of Cambodian Hip Hop - @sokvisal_officialig (KlapYaHands).

@pele.durianfunk (Bamboogie co-founder) picks things up and digs deep into the crates to warm the floor with a heavy bag of vinyl gems, before Bamboogie’s own local House and electronic selector @jamiessss.184 sets the tone for the night, then rising Thai selector @unixness heat things up with impeccable grooves from all over the planet. Korean selector @devinelectronica polishes off the night with anything and everything that feels right.

We have arranged free entry for all, so come in, kick off, and join us for this borderless blend of excellence in music. Wristbands will be available for the rest of Airtime at our kioisk outside.

Thank you to everyone who came down, to everyone who was still standing when the sun came up, and to everyone who made this thing work: Jazz Cat Luong, Just Ngoc, George Haruld, Red, Devin.   Dreamscape Tents for the build. Bacba for the banh mi, Irini for the Greek food. Saranai for the beach. The crews who set up, poured drinks, and packed it all down. 
Whatever’s happening on this coast, that night was it.
