The main concern of Devon Knowles’ work can be summarized by an observation made by the artist in 2020 that, “texture, colour, their source and the small variations in their physical dimensions are all important. Texture can blow out the colour as the physical light glares on its surface, making it impenetrable from certain points of view. What becomes evident at that moment, where it is all surface and you cannot see beyond the glare of external light bouncing, is a temporary boundary.” This idea of boundaries permeates Knowles’ work where her thoughtful use of materials drives the careful examination of spaces, edges, and their human presence.”

We are proud to share @devoneknowles “Lily Tree” consisting of four lily pad-like forms situated along Capstan Way near the Fraser River.

By increasing the lily pads scale and bringing them out of the water, the bright green tops expand their potential meaning. Just as lily pads provide cover for aquatic life in water, these steel fabricated leaves and stems provide shade and rest for all who pass by. At a distance this grouping’s form, colour, shape and scale also can resemble an abstracted version of a windswept forest.

On now for the month of June at Equinox Gallery is a group exhibition featuring works by Sonny Assu, Kim Dorland, Marten Elder, Gathie Falk, Jack Kenna, Gwenessa Lam, Erin McSavaney, Ben Reeves, Takao Tanabe, Angela Teng, Renée Van Halm, Neil Wedman, and Etienne Zack. (Included a couple pieces from the back room by Gordon Smith and Devon Knowles).

Continues until June 29th.

A walking tour of recent additions to the Richmond Public Art Collection, including this work ‘Lily Tree’ (2021) by @devoneknowles, will take place this Sunday, June 5th at 11am at 8199 Capstan Way in Richmond. The tour will include works by Equinox Gallery artists Gathie Falk, Khan Lee and Knowles, among others, and Knowles will be in attendance to speak about her work.

‘Lily Tree’ was conceived of by the artist through a consideration of the context of the site and it’s proximity to water. Because the building foundations in this area are constructed to float on soft earth, it became fitting that lily pads be selected to become the sculptural form in relation. Indigenous to freshwater in the region and beyond, the plant’s wide spanning leaf form allows their tops to float on water, while their anchored stems connect through an underwater, travelling network of roots.
