SUPER SATURDAY - @theboxplymouth
Creatures for Change Workshop
2-4pm
24 October
Urban Room
Ground floor, Roland Levinsky Building
University of Plymouth

Workshop designed and led by @devontippingdesigns

So pleased to see the work that we (@joannedorothea and @everydayelvis) started with @theboxplymouth and @plymartscinema back in 2023 to imagine the way we live ‘now’, start to take shape publicly this autumn!

In March this year, I brought together 40 practitioner-researchers and city culture folks to shape a public programme of performance, artworks, workshops and walks to respond to The Box Plymouth’s upcoming exhibition that marks the 80th anniversary of Jill Craigie’s film The Way We Live.

Over the summer, I’ve worked with colleagues to shape these ideas and produce 8 new projects, supported by the Urban Room’s @iamhannahirwin and Katie Shorten. These sit alongside work by @katharineswillis and others to form a big, city-wide autumn festival involving @nudgecommunity and many others

First up is this workshop for The Box Plymouth’s October 24 Super Saturday. Devon Tipping will be running Creatures for Change, which connects rural and urban folklore - as happens in The Way We Live, when the Copperwheat family is moved to Horrabridge. Imagine your guardian spirit that will help you imagine Plymouth’s future!

Free, but booking is required. Follow links to the online shop in The Box’s bio

I’ll be posting more information about upcoming events in the next week. But hold 7 November as the next big day, with walks, screenings and a new performance by Crab & Bee (Phil Smith and @doctorhelenbeee)

Come along and see this piece alongside so many other amazing artists at the Queer Joy Art exhibition at Angel Space, Totnes. Visibly being joyful is, in my view, such a powerful way to fight the gloom of the world and show others that life can be good, and they too can be a part of it! We need more joy, love and care, and so I am thrilled to be a part of such a cool exhibition.

Come along 24-27 September

I am so delighted to be launching bullet journals again this year, with plenty of time for the gifting season! (anyone else already beginning to scheme for Christmas? Or is it wayy too early for that?)

Pre-orders opens in two days time, on the 10th September!

Pre-ordering is so so important as a small business that tries to be as sustainable as possible, as it lets me know how many I should order so that I can make sure that the journals that are printed will be used, and help us achieve our goals for 2027!

I hope you like the design this year, featuring 'busy bees', and also a new mood tracker that you requested, alongside all the other great features from last year like monthly and weekly spreads.

The peace mural that is now finished on Mutley Plain has been a three year project, and so I am so so excited to see it come to life, and I thought Id share an abridged version of the steps that made it happen.

I am so glad to add a message of peace into the city, something that can uplift us when the world feels heavy and divided.

#peacemural #plymouthstreetart #doveofpeace #illustration #mural

@mrsmurals @devontippingdesigns

First of all is of course getting a proper sense of the brief, the building, what the vision is.

Then I ran creative workshops to listen to what people wanted for a mural, what people would like to see on the side of the building, what they wanted to feel when they looked at it.

Then it was taking all of that input and turning into a concept, and from a concept into a design.

From a concept to a design that would work with the shape, budgets and constraints of the building.

Next it was getting feedback and tweaking the design with rounds of revision.

A litte close up!

Then it was the admin related processes, the getting the design approved, planning permission, organising scaffolding, collaborating with the wonderful @mrsmurals on paint specs ect. (As might be expected, this was actually the longest part!)

But once all that was in place, it was time to paint!

@mrsmurals

Some more details!

And now time to celebrate a vision turning into reality!

Its been so so lovely to see and hear what people think of it, and its slightly crazy to walk past the building I designed each day.

I am so glad to add a message of peace into the city, something that can uplift us when the world feels heavy and divided.
