🥀HEREDIYA – [“Broken-hearted”]
The latest piece in my live performance series is a Zazakî folk song from the Erzincan region. This song is told from the perspective of a woman left behind, as her husband departs for Germany in search of a better life.

Erzincan is a region from which many Alevi Kurdish men migrated to Germany years ago. Some never returned; others built new lives there and remarried.

This song takes shape through the longing and heartbreak of the woman left behind, who laments:

“Why did he go so far away,
The one I adore with all my heart?
If it were Erzincan, I’d go and bring him back,
If it were Istanbul, I’d go and see him,
But Germany is too far, Germany is too far...”

Here is a sneak peek of my upcoming live performance of “Berde” (Leave Me Alone) in Sorani, composed by the legendary master Hassan Zirak. His stirring words—

“Life has become poison for me.
Come and see me,
O you who only disbelieved in me, look, I’m dying.”

—resonate deeply with the pain of unrequited love. I can’t wait for you to experience this heartfelt rendition on YouTube next week. Stay tuned and let the legacy of Hassan Zirak’s music move you as much as it moves me!
